Country : India | About Classic Tapa Contest- Classic Tapa Contest (CTC) is a contest for solving Classic Tapa Puzzles, along with its older sibling "Tapa Variation Contest".
- Everyday a new Tapa will be available to solve. Unlike TVC, all puzzles in CTCs are to be solved online.
- At the end of 2 months (exactly on the same day as TVC ends), a winner will be declared. The winner of CTC will have a title called Classic Tapa Master.
- First three competitor will get a Tapa puzzle book which is prepared by Serkan.

Summary of Mouse clicks- Left Click - Toggle shading of a cell
- Left Click + Drag to shade multiple cells.
- Shift+Left Click - Mark a circle in the cell.
- Shift + Left mouse click + drag to mark circles in multiple cells.
- Right Click - Toggle marking a circle in the cell.

I don't think Serkan is that kind. All wrong submissions will be penalized for real competitions puzzles.

Yes, every puzzle can be solved in 3 days, but 2nd and 3rd day has time/point disadvantages for solver. |

I somehow login but still not visible full screen, the puzzle is visible to solve.
i logged in using tab button and then pressing enter without seeing and then suddenly it logged in..
but still problem is there. |

jalbert was marking the white cells in a different color.
So, if someone else who hasn't figured out yet, please note that, white cells can be left blank or can be marked with a circle of any color.
All shaded cells HAVE to be colored (any color is fine )

- 15% time penalty for each late day (maximum 2 late days are allowed – so a puzzle can be solved upto 72 hours after it is uploaded)
- Each puzzle has its own points, which is computed from solving times of top 10% players on that day.
- Each player gets points for solving a puzzle based on own solving time and others’ solving times. Exponential distribution is used.
- Total points for a player is sum of puzzle points over 50 days.

Country : United Kingdom | Most people will know this, but CTRL-click to clear will be CMD-click (apple-click) on a Mac. In the instructions, it says you can start a puzzle 'any time in the next 24 hours' but that's actually 72 hours (with penalty) right?

So the CTC rotates around the server time and not GMT like the other contests? That is correct. It was bit of challenge to make it GMT based. Hope it is not too much of trouble for players. Once the cycle starts, it shouldn't matter which timezone is followed.

Thanks for reminding. Yes, standing is computed after penalty is added.
Added "W" column to show that.
Hope to get the "actual" score page ready soon.

The information is stored in LMI server. So it is possible to watch others' solves. I was not sure if anybody would be interested in that.
But we can easily add that feature.
(We probably need players' permission to allow this. I don't know how it works in other websites ) |

Country : Hungary | It seems to me that the 2 minutes penalty is extreme severe.
I dont like the change of rules after the start, but in this case we will get the final points of first puzzle just tomorrow evening. (GMT)
I suggest a 20-30% penalty instead of the fix 2 minutes. I think it would be more correct.
(And in this case I think it is better, if the penalties are added and not multiplied. For instanse 2 mistake is 40% (x1,4) instead of 44% (x1,2x1,2) )

It forces you to log on everyday or have your scores reduced.

Country : Turkey | Interesting, interesting because I didn't get it. Everytime we discussed about this contest, we (Deb and me) thought of CrocoPuzzle as an example. CrocoPuzzle has a system, and CTC works same as it. Also if i know correctly, CrocoPuzzle's daily puzzles are really daily puzzles, there are only 24 hours to solve. So we wanted to expand time period. When we made this, we had only one aim: giving a chance to all competitors. Because everyone may not have free time or something. So we made 3 days, and when we made this we thought that we are making a useful thing. So now i see some competitors dont think like us. If we didnt make 3 days, it was better? I don't think so.
You can think of this contest as "one day to solve" (like CrocoPuzzle), not 3 days, and go on.
About penalty points, we built a point system. One variant of the system is penalty points. 50 puzzles may have different difficulties. It'll has 30 seconds puzzles, 15 minutes puzzles; so when we thought about puzzle difficulty distribution we decided on 2 minutes. It is very early to say penalty points is much. Not much according to me. As I said above, we considered CrocoPuzzle system, and we built a thing. CrocoPuzzle gives +5 minutes penalty on each wrong submission, i am saying this because it also has a wide variety of different difficulties, and this system is accepted and being used for a long time. I think 2 minutes penalty seems pretty reasonable compared to it.
So i can say that rules are set and valid for every competitor and there won't be any changes on the system. We'll see how it works during the 50 days. Next year maybe we can come up with an improved system considering the suggestions, but this is the deal for this year. |

You choose to compete when you can, and the goals are both personal and interpersonal. So it works well as an everyday puzzle system because you opt in. I don't know, for a solver who can't do weekdays, or weekends, that this system with a rigid system really matches someone who would appreciate breaks.
Also, to be very clear as I think some people miss this, Crocopuzzle DOES NOT use a 5 minute penalty. This may be what you see reported on the published time ranking page, because until the puzzle is finished the error is not fixed. The actual penalty time is based on the median solve time of all the puzzle solvers without errors. It scales with difficulty. I think it is too punitive, as it is ~100% puzzle time value, and think Valezius at 20-30% is in a much better range with a proportional score. But indeed it can be 1m to 2h on different puzzles. |

To repeat:
- It's a pity we can't see a full leaderboard for each day's puzzles...
- ... also that there are no times shown.
- A final nice touch to the interface would be right-click and drag for multiple empty cells.
- Make competitive entry valid only on that specific day (or just last 7 days ), then we can discuss puzzles after they have elapsed.
My suggestions for puzzle availability and leaderboards are based on those at http://www.kwontomloop.com/ which I think works very well. |

This feature is awesome. But if there would have been like a 'pause' button then it would be even more useful as we could get more idea about the logic used by the solver. |

This might be related to me using Chrome - when I click to 'unshade' a square it sometimes flickers on and off rapidly instead of clearing (I'm also unable to reliably mark off used clues - I think that often a single click is treated as multiple clicks).

CoTi ( Competitor's time ) = Seconds Taken * Day Factor + 120 * Number of Wrong Submissions
CoPo ( Competitor's Points ) is calculated from "average CoTi of top 10% of players", median of all CoTi for the day, and your own CoTi
ToPo (Total Points ) is just sum of all CoPo's across all days.

Of course, I had seen once I was about to start at 12.12 that no one had finished yet, so I did it really slowly after a starting risk with T&E just for the possibility of getting an awesome time :P Was fun for the time I did it slowly. Funny how even after changing a digit there was a uniquely solvable puzzle. |

You're right on your assumption (according to Deb ). As for the multiple solutions, since the solution is treated as a 5, I assumed that to be correct and forming a valid puzzle, and didn't really check it out. Having looked back, I agree my assumption was wrong, and that only the one with a 6 gives a unique solution. |

I was just wondering as there seems to be a possibility developing that Valezius can catch up to places 2 and 3 as the gap has shortened considerably in the last few days. It might not make a difference but it could. Also I've been closing the gap to place 4 again, but the top 3 change would of course be a bigger development as that's been the same three people for well as long as I've been keeping track. |

We could have fixed the recorded solution, but by that time 2 players (Psyho and wielki_m ) had submitted the wrong solution, which the system flagged as right and (possibly ) had left the scene.

Real truth is the function of "undo" button. Providing this button was a mistake (Deb didn't want to use it but i insisted ) because solving with this button does not truly represent the action of Tapa solving. I made a lot of hard puzzles but this button makes everything so easy, it is so easy to make many trials and erase them.
I think what is discovered is how well a solver uses the undo button. It is not much related with Tapa. |

I'm yet to use the undo button myself but thats more to do with the fact that I just prefer a full clear and start over when I go wrong :P
I think the undo button is necessary though. Mis-clicks are always possible. The color changes are not as necessary IMO. |

Country : United States | As we've found the unfortunate fact about doing Tapa of this size online is that guessing becomes a preferred strategy in many cases. I've kind of been worried that with the ability to make other solves viewable by anyone for this particular contest that it will give the illusion of "guessing is how good solvers get good times". That might be true for 10 by 10 Tapa, but absolutely not in general. Even for the 12 by 12 sizes I avoid just guessing my way through it, at least too early, because there's too large a search space, and my better performances on those have usually been with logic. My total inability to figure out what was going on for March 25th was a notable exception to that, and I did have to rely on luck/"tapa sense" there. I think there's a sweet spot for the difficulty of the larger puzzles that makes them hard but still preferable to do with logic from a speed-solving perspective. March 23rd was dead on in my opinion, and March 25th overshot it a bit.
That said, I don't think it's necessarily the Undo button itself that harms things. I typically forget about it and waste time erasing things manually when a guess screws up, which is still faster than erasing on paper, and online it doesn't leave distracting stray marks too.
Also, I have been going back after the days I bifurcate and solving these logically. Almost every puzzle is fantastically designed, even if it ends up that guessing is the fastest way to get through them, so it's more just a issue with this being a contest than a matter of puzzle quality. However there have been a few days where I've had trouble getting a logical solution without minor T&E. The ones that come to mind are February 25th, March 22nd, and March 25th. |

That was the cause of the only 2-minute penalty I've gotten; it was my last click in that region and I instantly shifted my attention somewhere else without noticing the click hadn't gone through. The reliable method I've found since is to right-click on the square twice, which changes it into a dot and then to an empty square. |

At this point, we don't have any daily contests lined up. That certainly is not because of lack of motivation or willingness. It is mainly to find a proper puzzle type and an occasion. Equally importantly, we realize that there were some technical hiccups (mentioned multiple times in forum ), even if they were minor. So we'll try to do better in that front next time.
Once CTC is over, you will be able to solve and check solved/unsolved puzzles. |

First of all, congratulations to Palmer. He showed great performance and became the Tapa Master of 2012. In the last years, I was always wondering how Thomas solved all that puzzles in extremely short times; now I feel the same for Palmer. I didn’t make 19 puzzles to be finished. My aim was to force solvers to follow a strategy. But a guy that solves all puzzles in 66 minutes can only have one strategy: Kill ‘em all! : ) Once again I congratulate him for his self-confidence and earning the title by defeating this final cruel round.
The top three of TVC 2012 are:
1. Palmer Mebane (USA ),
2. Thomas Snyder (USA ),
3. Hideaki Jo (JPN )

50 days has been completed in CTC. I am as satisfied as you. It was a tiresome experience for me, Deb and Gulce. If Deb hadn’t come up with this brilliant idea and say “Let’s do a classic Tapa contest” no one would be thanking me today. At this very point I should say that I am not doing these on my own, that would be impossible. I am just a guy who makes puzzles. It is not unfamiliar for a puzzle maker to get all the credit, but Deb, Ulrich and Gulce who worked as hard as I did deserve applause. You already know Deb is dead set on this; he works round the clock for puzzles. I cannot get through so many tests without Gulce. And Ulrich was a great help with testing all TVC rounds this year. The puzzles are sometimes flawed before they are ready to be presented to you. It is really annoying to send flawed puzzles to a solver that has been world champion so many times : ) I should also thank Roland, he was also a tester of the last round, in spite of his lack of time. And Ulrich stil agreed to test the puzzles even he had flu last week.
With all of the above, I bow respectfully before these people. I am just a puzzle making robot, but the puzzles shape in flesh and bones thanks to these people.
Let me mention my favorite puzzles of TVC XII: Borders (b ), Compass (b ), Sweeper (a ) and TAPA TAPA.
CTC puzzles were made by me and Gulce. Until last night, I had no intention on publishing these puzzles after the contest is over. But I changed my mind and the reason for that was the files Palmer has been publishing in his blog. He has published two puzzle packs, containing tons of puzzles and solving tips; and I think these are amazing works. I thought about it and I decided that CTC puzzles now belong to the puzzle community, not us. The complete file will soon be available for download.
The top three of CTC are:
1. Palmer Mebane (USA ),
2. Hideaki Jo (JPN ),
3. Nagata Yuta (JPN )
As I stated at the very beginning, the top three solvers will receive a classic Tapa book that I prepared. The book is now being tested; maybe we can display its cover here. I will need the addresses of the top three in a few weeks. And later the book will be available for purchase at Akil Oyunlari blog: http://akil-oyunlari.livejournal.com
Our country is famous for a dessert named “Turkish delight”. It has many types; one of them is called “double roasted”, very delicious. Palmer took a “double roasted” victory by earning both titles. I congratulate and admire him.

I hope the puzzles will remain online new puzzlers to tackle and for us to practice on. Is that possible? And now if you "review" a puzzle, clear, and re-solve it, you can not check your answer. Would it be possible to change that at some point?
I don't mean to be asking for so much - you all deserve a good rest. My main point in writing is just to thank you for a great time. Bravo!
All puzzles will be available online (as long as LMI server has enough space ! )
We have added a "Check Solution" button, so you can now re-solve and check if the solution is correct. Thanks once again for bringing it up.

Before CTC started, I had requested Serkan if it is possible to have Tapa books for top 3 Indians, and he had very kindly agreed to the proposal.
Incidentally, or otherwise, they are also the top 3 players in TVC. Congratulations.

Thank you. Slightly disappointed that I couldn't finish well, but for a first time contest, I'll take that and learn from it. As for attracting the Indians, I think I remember at least 10 who participated almost everyday : ) Hope they all enjoyed the experience as much as I did. Congrats to Rohan and Swaroop. A good show from Swaroop, when we were discussing at around the start of CTC we both agreed he had an "outside chance" for 3rd. In the end, his 3rd place was probably the only one among the 3 of us that was never in doubt (Rohan did cross me a couple of times before I had my top-time-strings :P ).

This was my first TVC experience and CTC anyways was new to everyone. I have a learned a lot especially got to know lots of variations of TAPA's. It feels good to finish at 3rd position in INDIA in both TVC and CTC. Also thanks to Prasanna, who used discuss with me daily and clarify my doubts.
Hope to give tough fight next time. : ) |
