With a repeated strong performance at London WPC, Prasanna Seshadri receives a wild card for the Indian team. He will be joining the other top players from IPC 2015 at representing India in World Puzzle Championship 2015.

Also, like previous year, Prasanna will be organizing the IPC this year.

Certificates & Prizes

As we had done last year, we'll be sending participation certificates to all the official participants on their registered email IDs, after the competition takes place. Also, as we had done last year, we are making the hard copies of the certificates, along with the organizer's sign, available at the price of Rs. 99. The account details will be sent in the mail with the participation certificate. Unlike last year, we have set a deadline for our convenience. All requests for hard copies, along with details of preferred name, and mailing address, need to be mailed in reply to the Participation certificate email by 31st August. We will then courier all of them together in the 1st week of September.

In addition to this, the top 10 official participants will receive a prize each. Details about the prize will be announced here at a later date, and the prizes will be sent along with certificates in the 1st week of September.

In the Unscramble puzzle, is it about pairs having same characters or similar pattern in placement of characters or could be anything ?

As far I interpret, as it has been mentioned pair the figures, so it could be anything.

In B3-As easy as ABC(numbers), shouldn't the rules read "Enter the letters from the given range into the grid so that each row and column AND Irregular region contains each letter exactly once" because I see letters of the given range in each irregular region too.....

I don't think it can be 'anything'. How can you use 'placement' of characters after 'unscrambling' it? The placement gets lost, right?
This example is just about the same set of alphabets.

Yes, you're right. And not just Irregular Regions, its also the set of shaded cells.

Fixed Rule:
Enter the letters from the given range into the grid so that each row, column, thick-outlined region and the set of shaded cells contains each letter exactly once.

Thanks for clarifying.
I should have mentioned it clear, actually what I meant was it's not necessary that actual puzzle would be set of alphabets it could be anything else like numbers or images or anything.

B3 - Rule fixed in updated IB.

Swaroop's interpretation about A3 Unscramble is correct that 1) placement of symbols does not matter 2) the actual puzzle may not have letters.

Didn't quite follow the Square count & unscramble.
In unscramble, r we just looking at the same letters occurring in both the options?

And in square count what are the number of squares belong to?

In Statue Park it says:

Answer key: Enter the first three pentominos seen along the marked rows & columns. (– if not enough pentominos).

Since the bank is not necessarily the set of pentominoes, I suppose it should read "three shapes" (and "not enough shapes") instead?

Lots of new variants - to be expected from Prasanna :)

Out of the Classics, only Not Alone and Balance Loop haven't appeared in multiple LMI contests before (not counting Three-Point Snake since the additional rule from normal snake is minimal and actually can make things easier). Some of the variants are probably newish. Anyway, here are some practice links.

Outside LITS - http://www.gmpuzzles.com/blog/?s=Outside+LITS
Balance Loop - http://www.gmpuzzles.com/blog/?s=Balance+Loop
Not Alone - http://puzzleparasite.blogspot.in/search/label/Not%20Alone - Just one unless you have the enthusiasm to deduce which grid is the Not Alone from the Matchmaker, but that one has a really cool deduction as a break-in.
Statue Park, Gapped Kakuro & Loop The Loops have both appeared in past LMI Marathons, so solving those should get you more than enough practice on the two types. Other than that, some Loop The Loops will be on my blog, https://prasannaseshadri.wordpress.com/ and some Gapped Kakuros should be on GM Puzzles and Serkan's blog, https://yureklis.wordpress.com/ . Statue Park will be on GM Puzzles too. Full Tapa will be found in a past Tapa Variations Contest, and Fillomino [Stars] in Fillomino Fillia and on Palmer's blog, https://mellowmelon.wordpress.com/ .

Include 3x3/4x4/ and so on. With the image shown above for A, 3x3 and above isn't possible but it is for D, B and E (and C has many squares).

in B3, As easy as ABC (numbers) judging from the solution after "Letters ’x’ and numbers ’n’ outside the grid indicate that ’x’ is the ’n’th letter in that row or column" you should specify "looking from that point of view" (or similar wording). otherwise it's ambiguous

It is not ambiguous; if the letters and numbers are given on the left of grid, it is implied that it should be looked from left to right, same for numbers given at bottom, top and right of the grid.

Thanks Amit for the puzzles.
I have practiced tapas but I dont know what is a full tapa. Can someone please tell me what is the meaning of 1/2 in a tapa.

Hi, It's nothing but usual 1 and 2 clue in same cell, just for separation he used "/".

Letters are not part of Tapa Clues. Letters even don't represent Tapa shading cells.
Words should not block the Tapa Connectivity.

Answering that general question is difficult, if you are having troubles in solving any particular puzzle or stuck at any particular step, then post that, We would be happy to help you .

Thank you.
In the Instruction booklet there were 2 tapas mentioned. No questions on H1/H2.
In H3 - full tapa no doubt on shading the cells 1/3 or 3. Question is are we placing the number list or word list IB /2015/1000/5555 by trial and error.

Pls let me know.

Remember that every puzzle could be solved logically (atleast I can guarantee that would be case with IPC).

Just few steps to approach H3:
1) r1c1,r2c1,r2c2 and r1c3 are shaded, r1c3 is unshaded. This also makes r1c4 shaded.
2) Now the "3" clue can be two ways -- (i) r3c1 r4c1 r5c1 or (ii) r3c2 r3c3 and r4c3.
3) There is letter 'B' already given, so from the list of choices only one word fits, which is "IB" , so 'I' at r1c5.
4) Immediately it follows, r2c4 r2c5 r2c6 will be shaded.
5) Now if the "3" clue follows (ii) , then there will be isolated blank cell at r2c3. (as there is no word or numeral of single size).
6) So now you get r3c2 r3c3 r4c3 r5c2 r5c3 as unshaded. So all these will contain some given characters/numerals.
7) It's easy now to fit three 4 digit numbers (as there is only one way).

I have doubt regarding Hidden Pairs Puzzles. IB says as below
This Hidden Pairs puzzle will be based on one of the puzzle types that is elsewhere in the Puzzle Booklet. The type will also need to be deduced looking at the images.

My doubt is will only one puzzle type be used to match the hidden pairs or there will be multiple different puzzle types?

1) Do I need to make any payment or is it free.
2) I start using Instant grading and at some point say after 2 puzzle submissions can I switch to the normal mode.
3) After I start the timer , I am logged out . Once I finish can I login again and submit the answers.

Pls let me know.

A. It is free to all.
B. Instant grading means once you submit the Answer for a puzzle you will instantly know whether your ans is correct or not. If on first attempt your ans is correct you will get full points else on seconds submission 90%, third submission 70%, fourth submission 40% of the points. After that it is nil points only.
C. Yes one can log out and again re-log in. But the timer will start from the first log in.

Three points are given. One is start of the snake, second end of the snake and the third one exactly the mid point of the snake.

The IB says the snake does not touch even at point mean it must not touch diagonally.

Did not work on either Chrome or IE or Firefox at 3 different PCs in office - and I did check the flash installation on those boxes (I am still stupefied).

Was about to leave disheartened - when I logged to a fourth PC at office - and bingo I could see the login screen.

Luckily, because I have the administrator password for all pcs in office, I could login through multiple boxes and get one where it worked.

I would suggest putting a test page, where people could login and check their system technological compatibility (say a page for entering answers to puzzles in Instruction Booklet) before the test itself - rather than figuring this out after the test begins.

Thanks to Prasanna and Deb for organizing IPC. Wonderful puzzles as always.

I definitely felt better this year than last year and the dreadful year before last. Except for a couple of small minor stumbles, the test went fairly smoothly for me. Missed the 1000-score, probably needed another 10-minutes or so :-)
Congrats to Amit and Swaroop for 2nd and 3rd. This is the team I predicted and I hope we can achieve India's best rank at the WPC this year assuming we perform consistently and assist Prasanna's tremendous run at the WPCs recently.

Rajesh, seems to be having a year of just missing out. Missed TSC finals by a rank, and now missed the A-Team by a rank. But good to see you still up there.
Ashish... what a wonderful performance. I think we're definitely going to have some interesting competition in the near future. Keep it up.
Rakesh, Jayant, Jaipal... the usual suspects :-)

Did the Instructions Booklet (IB) provide enough information about participating in IPC? Yes, mostly.
Did you understand the puzzle rules, examples and answer keys from the IB? I understood most of them.
Did you find enough easy puzzles to solve during the championship? Yes, there were many of them.
After your experience in IPC, are you going to participate in future championshiops or contests at LMI? Most likely

Is this test going to affect ratings, or is it not going to be used because it is an official test?

IPC and ISC start very late in the weekend for most international players, so some may not be able to participate. So we have never considered them for ratings.

35 puzzles in 150 minutes makes most of them to be easy, although there are certainly the harder puzzles. Naturally Kakuro wrecks my performance again; solved all 32 other puzzles in 115 minutes, solved C1 in 7 minutes, and got nothing for the rest two Kakuro in the remaining 28 minutes.

Excellent puzzles overall. Most are just okay symmetrical patterns with good solutions, although some are really nice surprise like the IPC and 2015 Statue Park, and the Outside LITS. I don't find Squares Count worthy of its 41-point status, perhaps because I managed to find a way to calculate the number of squares in a consistent manner. (Identical Pairs took more time. Did any of those solving on paper tried cutting the images and rotating them to make things much easier?)

Thanks a lot, I really enjoyed this test. A comfortable level of difficulty, maybe except for the Kakuros.

The instant scoring had me maybe a little too careless on submission -- I'd tend to let the engine do the checking, not sure if that paid off. It did pay off to guess the last two "identical pairs" after staring for a while.

One minor thing: It would have been nice if the Gapped Kakuro page had repeated the 0-for-gap thingy (or did I miss it?).

Somehow, the smaller puzzles are harder than the medium sized ones, sometimes by a significant margin. I am not sure whether that's a good thing.

IPC 2015 is over. Thanks to everyone involved (Deb, Bram, Bastien, Vladimir, Tiit) for helping me organize it.

Congratulations once again to the winners. Rohan Rao posted a winning total of 930.4, which is impressive considering this is the same format as last year where the winning total was 645. It is also impressive considering that he is 14th in the International segment whereas last year, India's best total was 25th in the International segment. Last year's winner, Amit Sowani seemed a bit off-pace this year but still scored 773.7, which was enough to be the Runner-Up. Swaroop Guggilam completes the A-team with a total of 725.2 at 3rd place. Among the remaining rankings, Ashish Kumar showed a notable improvement, moving from 14th last year to 5th this year. The International segment of the competition saw 189 participants, with 13 solvers finishing the entire set and posting a score of 1000+. The three best scores were 2165.4 by deu (Japan), 2099.9 by EKBM (Japan) and 1588.7 by uvo (Germany). The Indian participation for IPC was on the lower side, but hopefully with a shift to Puzzle Ramayan for next year's selection, with a more beginner-friendly format, we can encourage more Indians to take up and pursue other puzzles too as they do Sudoku.

The Solution Booklet will be posted over the weekend.
Thank you all for participating!

I had participated in Indian Puzzle Championship 2015, but have not received the participation certificate.
Could you please mail it to my registered id?

Also, can I still make a request for Hard Copy of the certificate, though the last date is over?

To add to what Varun said, since the delay for the certificates is on our side and not yours, you will be given 2 weeks after the mail is sent to request for hard copy. We will send it soon. Apologies for the delay, we have been more focused on getting the first Sudoku Mahabharat and Puzzle Ramayan rounds ready.

The 2015 edition is over of course, but there is an ongoing qualification process for the finals of the 2016 edition, known as Puzzle Ramayan. Look at the schedule here - http://logicmastersindia.com/PR/2015-16pr.asp .
Note those dates and participate in those on this site. Refer to this page for details on how to participate - http://logicmastersindia.com/forum/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=381

Is this championship different from the National Sudoku Championship? And if this is different, then when is it due in 2016 and the process for the same. Thanks.

It is different, and it is done for this year, on 17th of July, in Chennai. However if you keep track of the forum you should be able to see more contests both in puzzles and Sudoku. The past content of Indian Puzzle Championship is available for free here - http://logicmastersindia.com/lmitests/downloads.asp?testType=99 . This year's content isn't public and is on sale. Check here for details - http://logicmastersindia.com/forum/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=1014&...
