I wish I could offer a full proof that the puzzle solution is unique, but I don't have one!

Though I think that we can then prove that the best you can do is 10 shaded squares in a 3x8, in which the configuration you provided (and rotations and reflections) is the only one that works, but it will never fit the number clues. |
