A Sudoku contest was organized as part of the annual cultural festival Saarang ( http://www.saarang.org/2014/main ), at IIT Madras (Chennai). Prelims had some classics, a few variants and kakuro. Among the participants were Kishore, R Varun, Thejesvini, Ezhil, Ashish and myself.

The sudokus used in the finals were very tough. There were 10 variants:
(a) Nine in Six
(b) Triple Crowd
(c) Tripod
(d) Little Killer
(e) Mr X
(f) Odd Even frame
(g) Pentomino fest
(h) Sum of them
(i) Irregular
(j) Greater than Killer

A little note :

We found out that these Sudokus were being copied from past LMI tests and probably other sources we're not sure of. We have since contacted the organizers at Saarang, and they were completely unaware that these Sudokus shouldn't be copied for commercial use without permission, and were oblivious to the fact that already public Sudokus should not appear in a competition. Since the competition is over, we opted to not take any action this time, and the organizers have apologized and promised to approach LMI for original content in future.

We'll be monitoring the same, and assure the authors your creative content will not be used in this way for this tournament again.

A side note to LMI's Indian members :

If you happen to participate in a tournament that has different variants and doesn't have LMI's name or logo mentioned anywhere, there are these possible causes -
1) There is an author/authors who is/are good enough to write these Sudokus and should be informed about the existence of LMI in case they don't know.
2) It is copied content in which case it is not only unethical but also not fair to competitors.

Either way, we would like to know and be able to take action. Thank you :)
