Does it end at another clue? I misunderstood the instructions at first and imagined it was "immediately adjacent shaded cells" only. The IB states that "Additionally, each digit clue also represents a guard. The digit's value indicates the number of shaded cells in the corresponding direction. A digit in the undivided cell must satisfy the count constraint in at least one of the four directions. " The cells need not be immediately adjacent, as the example suggests. A guard's view extends to the edge of the grid and is not blocked by other clues. The rules are based on the competition booklet format. The IB has already gone for printing.
