Are there any hints to solve Quadro Sudoku. Stuck at practice booklet 6*6 variation.
Hi
I think the trick is to find the cells which can be only odd/ or only even but we don't know the digits yet.
Here are steps which I followed:
1 ) getting 1's - Trivial steps - you get 1 at r1c3,r3c4 and r4c1
2 ) Now lets see which cells have to be odd - r4c2 and r3c5 has to be odd as 2,4,6 can't come there.
3 ) Now notice r2c4 r2c5 r3c4 r3c5 forms quadro and out of which we know three of them are odd and hence r2c4 will be even.
4 ) This implies r2c4 is 2 and r2c6 is 3.
so you can keep putting which cells are known odd or even, which will help to avoid 2*2.
Not giving complete solution as these are few starting steps which will get you started. You can post again in case you are stuck at some point.
Enjoy : ) |

Country : India | Somehow I missed step 3. I started at 9*9 and was able to solve it. After that my eyes could see step 3 in 6*6 and I am able to solve.
Thanks a lot for your efforts and such a nice explaination |

Thanks, Deb !
I knew my black cartridges were empty and that I would have some problems soon.... It was today :( . Fortunately the online solving was enabled. So, tanks for the online solving too :)
I have no idea if I could have made a better time with my plan of solving the 9*9 variants on paper.

Yes, it's planned. My problem is that when my printer tells me that the cartridges are empty, it's far to be true, I can still print a lot of sheets until it doesn't print correctly. So I prefer to wait until it's really empty, hoping there is no sudoku tournament that day ... |

I did practice from the booklets of earlier rounds and insructions booklet of odd and even variations,as you had suggested.
Not new to sudoku completely. I participated in the Bombay Times Competition last year and had managed to clear the first round.
Thanks.

Encompassing the less common variants, this episode of SM turned out to be very difficult for me.With about 2 minutes left on the clock and 25 odd cells to be filled in the odd even count (15 ),I made a desperate attempt and guessed at 2 circled cells knowing that chances of finishing it logically are close to nil.Thankfully and luckily, the guesses turned out to be right and the time was just enough to submit the 2 answer keys . Even though the outcome is that I have completed all,I'm not content with the way that I solved this test, as I remember resorting to guesswork in 3 sudokus atleast. Oddly,my favourites in this test or the ones that I enjoyed solving the most are the classics as the rest were mostly a kind of struggle between me and the sudokus.I wasted a lot of time on the first sudoku that I attempted (Odd even count (5 ) ) just like in the last episode.Got broken twice and then noticed the logical continuation. Not a great thing to experience at the beginning of a test. So to conclude,an interesting and a very difficult test. Not surprising though, because the author is Deb!. The sudokus were excellently constructed .Thanks a lot for a great test Deb. |

This is interesting because overall (including the Chain ) I found Round 3 easier than Round 2. Maybe you are just not familiar with the O-E marking ways to make these puzzles easier? I am bringing up this point mainly because this is one of the reasons for categorizing the variants - to discuss specific techniques that may be common to a category.
My only pause was on the 6x6 Odd Sum Pair because I was being stupid with eliminating a possibility I shouldn't have. Everything else went pretty smoothly. |

Subjective, I guess.I managed to finish episode 2 in about 65 mins and the current one dragged me until the very last.So you can pretty much sum up how difficult it was for me.

You have hit the nail on the head.I too felt that the lack of familiarity with those O-E marking hurt me a lot. Also, I probably should have solved the example puzzles of the new variants like Odd sum pair and Odd Even count which I failed to do...... |

I don't know if it was my printer, but I found the shading on the cells for teh even sudoku very dark. I'd actually printed the example booklet off a different printer and that was fine. |

The way I see it is, now you have a better idea where your strengths and weaknesses are, and that's a net positive to take out of it ; ) I generally just circle the odds. Might be better markings out there, but practicing the types basically lets you try out such markings, and grow accustomed to the ones that suit you specifically. |

Country : India | Congratulations Rakesh, Kishore and Saheer for taking the top 3 Indian spots. After 3 rounds, Kishore leads the leaderboard, followed by Rakesh and Jayant.
Congratulations also to Jan, Kota and TiiT for their very impressive timings and finishing as top 3 overall.
Thank you everyone for their feedback, I'm happy that the round was generally liked by all.
There has been some comments about the difficulty of some sudokus - I don't have much to add other than what Prasanna has already mentioned. But I would encourage players (especially new players ) to post here if they are not able to solve any of the variants logically.
So, three rounds over now, four more to go. It has been an exciting tournament for the organizers with so many Indian players participating.
Over to Rakesh for the Outside round.
