The PB is available now at http://logicmastersindia.com/SM/201801/
Notes for Offline solvers:
(1 ) Linked 6x6 and 9x9: The shading of the linked cells may be printed little lightly (feebly ) on some printers. In case you face this issue, please refer to the PB pdf for actual shaded cells.
Notes for Online solvers:
(1 ) Linked 9x9: For some users, there may be a slight gap in the alignment of the cell boundary and the pencilmarks (orange square ). You can ignore the alignment gaps and continue solving as normal.

Well that's not a good start for me. Most probably this would be my discard. I kept breaking puzzles. I broke both overlapping again and again. I broke bigger linked. 30 min are gone by this time with all wrong. Started fresh again. And this time i got it right fortunately. Nonetheless very nice set of puzzles. Enjoyed a lot. Well done. |

2018 is going to be such an exciting year for puzzle competitions, and I couldn't have asked for a better set to start. My only real issue is that the 6x6 expanded sudoku isn't really a variation, but rather two completely independent grids presented in a somewhat confusing way. It took me 180 minutes to finish the whole set, so I've got a lot to work on when it comes to solve times. Everything fell apart when I tried to enter the answer key for the large XV with seconds to go, but I mixed up the answer strings. Thanks for a great set! Edited by paramesis 2018-01-12 6:55 AM

Since the grid was effectively 12x12, the intention was to keep the solve simple and "hide" two 6x6s, as you correctly noted. There were multiple ways of complicating the grid but we decided against it for the contest since the grid had become large. |

On hindsight, you should probably have started the test 30 minutes later. Timing matters. |

Despite the fact that I enjoyed a lot, there were some puzzles that had multiple correct answers, but apparently system was willing to accept only of the possible correct solution. Please look into the matter so points can be given fairly to each participants. |

It seems you missed the converse rule. Converse is the theme of three sudokus - XV, Consecutive and Average. In these puzzles, ALL the possible symbols (bars for consecutive, X / V for XV, and lines for Average ) are marked on the grid.
Kindly check your multiple answers. I am sure there will be rule violations in these -
(a ) two neighbouring numbers adding to 10 without an X, or adding to 5 without a V
(b ) consecutive numbers without a symbol, and
(c ) central number being the average of two neighbours without a line. |

A great start to SM 2018 ! I hope the trend continues in all respects and aspects : ).I had a very smooth run during the test. Not breaking any sudokus helped a lot. I really enjoyed solving the Linked Classics (14 points ) ,overlapping (12 ) and Expanded (7 ) as well.Consecutive (11 ) was the hardest to crack for me following by XV (9 ).I felt that the set is on the harder side and should be difficult to complete but there was no doubt about the fun quotient.I enjoyed a lot .Well done Akash ! |

In your solution, in column 1 first two cells are 1 and 4. They add to 5 but there is no V symbol. |

The layout of the Overlapping Sudoku was different from the sample sudoku. This created a little confusion. May be the intent itself was to find out which boxes are overlapping. It would have been helpful, if the similar layout (Overlapping Sudoku ) was provided in the sample also |

Good point. The IB puzzle layout was intentionally kept different from the PB puzzle in this case. The puzzle itself was very easy, though. I don't think it would have affected much solving-wise, except for the surprise in the visual part of layout. |

I feel the best strategy is to trial-and-error through them since they are hardly worth any points rather than logically working them out (which takes longer).
When I look at the 6x6 XV or the 6x6 Consecutive, I am not convinced that these are great introductions for solvers before they tackle the larger 9x9.
I think the reason they are worth a lot less is because they are more prone to lucky guessers.
I suggest either: A/ having it worth more, since the steps are non-straightforward or
B/ have the 6x6 actually be simpler since they are worth way less points. |

This is an interesting point to discuss.
So first of all, at least for this contest, the test solvers have solved the 6x6s and 9x9s logically. So guesswork did not factor into the timings, and the points were calculated and assigned based on the timings and not any external factors. So in that sense, I'd say at least in theory that they weren't intentionally undervalued or given a lower value 'because' of a quicker solving path via guesswork. So I don't think A can be done here since it would just be random subjective overvaluing.
But about them not being great introductions, I would love to discuss further because I see it going both ways. I think that if there is an introduction, an intermediate and then a final level, then what you say is definitely the way to go because then we can have the intermediate preparing solvers to tackle the regular difficulties while the introduction can be easy to be most approachable. But since we just have a 6x6 directly leading into a 9x9, a straightforward 6x6 leading into a difficult 9x9 doesn't do much in preparing you for it. So personally I think it is fine to have some easy ones and some difficult ones among the 6x6 variants within the format used here, to give options both of approachable variants and of variants where, if you attempt the 6x6 logically, you'll be better equipped to deal with higher levels and difficulties. |

Hi. The Instruction Booklet will have a Linked Sudoku example with its solution. The corresponding shaded cells in both sudokus will contain the same digits. So, if you get any digit in a shaded cell in one of the sudoku, then you can directly fill up the same digit in the other sudoku in the corresponding shaded cell. |

Country : India | Congratulations to Kota Morinishi , Jan Zverina and Seung Jae Kwak for taking the top 3 spots and also to Kishore Kumar, Rohan Rao and Shaheer Rahman for taking the top 3 spots among the Indians. I really enjoyed authoring this round. My personal favourites were Linked Classics (9x9) , XV (9x9) and Consecutive (9x9). Thanks to logicmastersindia for giving me this opportunity. I hope you all liked the sudokus . Its actually been a long time since I have solved sudokus. With all my authoring assignments over , I can get back to solving :) |

I'm using a mac and preview to print the PDF files on to a Brother HL-L2340DW printer.
I've also just tried to print 2017 SM files. They print perfectly. |

This 2018 file has been produced using "PoDoFo - http://podofo.sf.net". Rather unhelpfully their bug tracker doesn't seem to exist. |
