"Which equation yields maximum output?

Only addition and subtractions are used."

Is this just for the example or for the actual test that only addition and subtraction are used?

Actual test also.
As we mentioned, the instructions for the example puzzle and test puzzle are same for all.

*I don't think I understand the rules of Max Turns and Max Weights.

*In Max Weights,I got maximum weight for C in the following way :

(3A+B)2 = C(1)+D(2)

which gives C =4 //D = 3//A = 1 //B= 2

Why is the solution D ???

*For Max Arrows, the solution is shown as (?) It should be B

Also, while taking the demo,I found the progress meter in green at the top showing how the time is being eaten very irritating and distracting.I would trust my eyes to look at the corner of the screen rather than some other factor indicating to me that my time is going down......

On Weights, A=1, B=3, C=4, D=2. So, answer is C. Will fix it.

On Max Turns, A=2, B=1, C=5, D=3. Do you how a laserbeam works with mirrors?

Sorry :-)

Based on previous ST's feedback, the small little digits in the corner is 'too subtle', and players liked the idea of a bar (so that they know how soon the time will end from the corner of an eye). Not sure which is better, we will try out the green bar this time.

Actually, lets hear from few others. If some more players feel the previous slider was better than the current bar, we can revert back.

Thanks a lot Rohan for the clarification and Deb for the image . I understand now the rules of it.As regards time,if the green meter is tried out this year ,I only hope that I somehow manage to mentally shut it down during the test......

Looking forward to ST5 !

Also for the mines ,can there be a mine in any cell?(other than the numbered ones)
.also what do the numbers outside the grid signify??

For Max Shapes, S appears 10 times and T appears 6 times. Remember, the shapes can be rotated/reflected.

For Mines, there can be a mine on any cell which doesn't have a clue. The numbers outside the grid are the answer options, nothing to do with the puzzle :-)

Clarifying rules of "Max Tiles"

It seems the rules for "Tiles" is not clear to some players.
Please note that
1) the Tile can appear anywhere in the right side grid. See updated example below.
2) It is not like domino where [3 4] is same as [4 3].

We have updated the example.

The answer to this is D (Tile 43)
Tile A (12) appears 3 times in the grid, Tile B (23) appears 3 times, Tile C (34) appears 2 times in the grid, and Tile D (43) appears 4 times in the grid.

About "Max Shapes"

It should be clear from the grid and example, but following line is missing from the instructions "Black cells can not used while placing the shapes."

Details about Penalty structure

There is no penalty if you Skip a Puzzle.
Otherwise, minimum penalty for getting a puzzle incorrect = 25.
Additionally, you get more penalties depending upon how many other players submit the same or other wrong answers.
Example :
Lets say a puzzle has 4 options.
Option 1) Correct Answer
Option 2) submitted by x number of players
Option 3) submitted by y number of players
Option 4) submitted by z number of players
Lets have P = max(x,y,z)
Total penalty for players submitting Option 2) = 25 + 25 * ( P - x ) / P
Total penalty for players submitting Option 3) = 25 + 25 * ( P - y ) / P
Total penalty for players submitting Option 4) = 25 + 25 * ( P - z ) / P

So, the higher is the difference between 'most incorrect' and 'your incorrect', higher is the penalty.

Also note that, if you select the answer and keep, but didn't click on Next Puzzle.
Then it will get automatically submitted once the time is over. So don't select any option unless you are sure about it. Of course not in the case when you want to try your luck of guessing ;)

"I really enjoyed it"... a bit too stressful to really enjoy, but I do think it was a great test. And I didn't do as badly as I feared!

Regarding the interface: I'd prefer a bigger and non-dropdown answer entry mechanism. Ideally just a set of big buttons (including a skip button) with no confirmation. I don't want to judge puzzle quality because I have too little comparison for the format. I don't really understand (and haven't tried to understand) the penalty system, so no answer there either.

The puzzles that I had trouble with: I didn't see the contradiction in that one Sudoku even though I looked for it, guess I should have skipped instead. I'm not the only one it seems. On the pyramid, I missed the 19 and thought you were being cheeky with multiple maximal solutions (the answer format allowed that). And I should have thought to take the maximum in parallel row by row. Finally I would have guessed the correct one for the squares, but miscounted and couldn't confirm it was the maximum.

Looking forward to the screen test at the WPC 2017!

I have found that I understood about the max. rotation was wrong. I thought it was the clockwise rotation of the images from the options but it is actually the clockwise rotation of the original image. Though, I really enjoyed the test.

Four 2x2 squares
Five 3x3 squares

This contest may be great for identifying truly skilled puzzle solvers but I really did not have much fun (and if puzzles are not fun, why do them?). Too many of the questions seemed to be "how quickly can you count and remember totals under pressure". And I cannot do weights or minesweeper puzzles entirely in my head. So I ended up trying to use intuition or taking a guess. But maybe it's just me...a lot of others seem to really enjoy it.
I shall look forward to the next regular contest next week. Thanks

Great puzzles, but in the latter part, paper was necessary for me. (Especially Mines)

So, a quick walkthrough for the more tricky puzzles (those that aren't just "just count"):

Shades: Count least white squares.
Perimeter: Slide lines outside to form a rectangle.
Triangles: Count 1-triangles, then 2-triangles (made of two small triangles), and so on.
Circles: Fingers are your friend. Keep track with your fingers on the screen.
Sums: Discard the 99s. If you're quick, you can do all 24 possible sums; if not, you can prune this by starting by using the 7, and if not then the 6s, and so on.
Rotation: Find the one that rotates counterclockwise the smallest. Take two or three consecutive terms and find them in the options to determine the angle.
Weights: Top bar means A+B+C=9, D+E+F=12. Top-right bar means D+E=6, F=6. That's enough to determine the heaviest weight.
Total: Work from bottom to top. Just before the last row, you definitely want to move to the bigger number. Replace the second bottom-most row with this result (2, 1, 3, 1, 1) and discard the bottom-most row. Continue with the third bottom-most (8, 8, 11, 10), and so on. Best done on paper.
Squares: Count 1x1, then 2x2, and so on.
Mines: Corners sum to 7, so there are at most 12 mines (corners + 5 making the plus shape in the middle). Try that. Edges sum to 11, with the center square it's 12, so the diagonals (except the middle) are otherwise empty. This leaves 7 mines in 8 squares, easily checked.
Solutions: A has one solution, the rest zero. B's contradiction: R1-2C5 means R3-4C6 are 23, which means R5-6C4 are 23, but R5C4 is blocked. C's contradiction: R1C4 and R3C4 must both be 1 (by respective box and C4). D's contradiction: R3C2 must be both 1 and 4 (1 by C1 and C3, 4 by R4).
Shapes: L is contained in M many times, so L must be more than M. Whenever I is on the grid, you can extend it to a H, which includes L many times as well.
Distance: Try to link a letter to another letter, so that one of them uses the other in the shortest path; this rules out the latter.
Instructionless: Largest number when all digits are read from that direction.

Of course, the best puzzles are Weights, Mines, and Shapes. I'd like to choose Solutions as well but I don't think those contradictions can be made really quickly; I ended up just doing them on paper, deriving numbers as many as I can until I find a contradiction.

Congrats to omeometo, nyoroppyi and tarotaro for making an all-Japanese podium. Not surprisingly, there were six Japanese in the Top-10. Disappointing to see the performance by Indians, but I guess it happens.
I think choatic_iak has summarized the puzzles well in his post above, so I'll skip that.

Four players solved all puzzles correctly: semax (6th), deu (8th), moss (10th), uvo (12th)

Most solved puzzles: Skyscraper (252), Shapes (246), Shades (242), Arrows (240), Circles (236)
Most correctly solved puzzles: Shapes (94%), Skyscrapers (92%), Arrows (91%), Shades (88%), Circles (88%)

Least solved puzzles: Solutions (44), Squares (69), Sums (123), Distance (135), Mines (141)
Least correctly solved puzzles: Solutions (18%), Squares (27%), Sums (51%, Mines (54%), Distance (57%)

Fastest solved puzzles (Most Points): Shapes (116), Arrows (98), Skyscrapers (77), Weights (75), Shades (74)

Seems like Solutions and Squares were clearly ones where a lot of players missed out.
There were quite a lot of submissions in less than 10 seconds, which is really cool.

Its always a pleasure working with Deb (who authored most of the puzzles) on organizing a contest... I wonder how he manages to come up with novel ideas each time in different dimensions.
It would be interesting to know the favourite puzzles of players, but, my favourites were Distance, Arrows and Shapes.

Thanks to all the 280 participants. I hope there were at least a few puzzles for each of you to enjoy solving.

And finally... after authoring 3 STs and testing 1 ST, I hope to be a participant in ST6! (a shout-out for all you wonderful authors out there :-) )
