No converse rule since there is no line that all product squares are given.
Yes, all four operations for each 3x3 box, i.e. the Sudoku will contain either 4 operation clues or none for any given 3x3 box. |

Country : India | Killer Sudoku: Try to focus on thing that total sum in each row or column or box should be 45. So you can get 4 of the digits directly at r3c3,r7c7,r6c4 and r4c6 using totaling rule in box 1,9,8,2 repectively. Also focus on sums which you know the pairs like 17 - 2 digits (98) , 16 - 2 digits (97) etc even 24 - 3 digits (789) etc. Try writing possibilities of known sums like 5 can be either 3+2 or 4+1 try to elliminate one of them. I guess this should get you started .
Frame Sudoku : It follows somewhat similar concept of killer to write down combinations of each sum. Starting with easiest ones. Like 6 -> 1+2+3, 7 -> 4+2+1, 23 - 6+8+9 etc. Then see the interaction of vertical and horizontal clues. E.g. box 1 -> If you see second row first 3 digits should sum to 20 because 1-9 will add to 45 and there is already 13 and 12 in 1st and 3rd row. Now with vertical clue of 7 which can be 4+2+1, r2c3 cannot be 2 or 1 and hence it has to be 4. This leaves 9-7 pair in r2c1c2. Similar thing in box 9 --> r9c7 should be 3 (it cannot be 1 or 2). So try to think in this direction. |

Any tips for mathdoku?
Well, two things stand out for Mathdoku (considering 9x9 ) - anything higher than 17 has to be due to multiplication, and prime numbers >10 like 11/13/17 have to be due to addition. There are similar restrictions for subtraction and multiplication too, just narrow it down box by box. |

There was a theme in the Killer too, just in case people miss that. I'm glad you enjoyed the puzzles : ) |

I knew that Rakesh you are good in Math Variations, so had a little thought in mind that if want to lead you then need to do really fast. As i am weak in Math variations. But after test was over i felt that i did well than i thought but little i know that still you are leading :) Well done.
Thanks LMI and Prasanna for awesome test :)
Looking forward to Next Episode. |

Very nice puzzles Prasanna! It's been a long time since I participated in a test. The math-theme suits me always fine, so this was a good moment to join again. Unfortunately I messed up the mathdoku once and the killer twice near the end, otherwise I would have been close to completing a test. Thanks for all the efforts; keep up the good work! : ) |

Ah!That was an enjoyable sprint test.I feel completely satisfied with my performance.I would have wrapped up the test in ~60mins had it not been for the 3 broken attempts in product sudoku 1! I kept repeating the same mistake of assuming the 12 product in Box 6 to be composed of 3,4 pair. (2,6 ) never occured to me until the fourth attempt during which I started from a different portion of the puzzle.Eventually, this 'little' puzzle ended up costing me 11mins.But that was just a single negligible blemish in an otherwise wonderful test. My favourites of the lot were Mathdoku and Frame sudoku. The way in which 5 and 1 played their part in Mathdoku was fascinating.Frame sudoku turned a bit difficult and more interesting towards the end. Thanks a lot prasanna for a delighful set of sudokus!I had great fun solving the test...... |

Country : India | The test was really nice...thanks Prasanna. First time, I completed all the puzzles. It was satsfying.
In between, I lost almost ~25 minutes....as current went off. I was submitting all puzzles except 6x6 puzzles...and in between this
sets up the panic on me, as I was concerned, if I could even able to submit or not...and, I tried to access LMI on my mobile...but page didnt turn up.
Finally by God's grace I could submit them on time.
I have not broken a single puzzle even in time during and after panic. I would like to thanks Prasanna for this
as he told me to just get puzzles right and dont think of speed...that will eventually come.
Really thanks Prasanna.

Country : India | It was a wonderful set of puzzles prasanna. I had expected it to be both tough as well as tricky but it was far from both. In around 70 min I had completed everything except the 7 pointer arrow and 3 pointer product Sudoku. But as it always happens with me in the last minutes , I couldn't finish product Sudoku . Kept making mistakes in that . Nevertheless, the test was real fun . Thanks a lot prasanna. |

You can send the screenshot to my email (prasanna16391@gmail.com ) if you still want me to take a look, but remember that each box must contain the four different operations, and that might be your problem. If you have +, -, * AND / in each box and still have a uniqueness issue, then send along the screenshot. |

It looks very curious that the %Correct of Mathdoku 6x6 is obviously lower than the others... Unfortunately I myself am one of them who involuntarily contributed to it :-P Edited by Yuhei Kusui 2015-01-19 8:12 PM

Country : India | Sudoku Mahabharat Round 5 is over. Thanks to everyone for participating. Thank you especially to Dave, Swaroop, Richard, Kishore, Gaurav, Akash, Nikaash and Devarajan, Yuhei for the compliments about the puzzles and other feedback. I've been a bit busy over the weekend but I've been keeping an eye on things and am glad to see that the newer solvers seem to have enjoyed the contest. When we thought of organizing this tournament that was the main goal. The contest was easier for veterans than previous rounds, but I had a feeling that I'd need to make it that way if I wanted the newer solvers to solve more, since we are more familiar with the tricks of Math variations. Overall, I think the contest has achieved that and its nice to see that many veterans have seemed to enjoy the sprint challenge too.
Richard: Glad you chose my test to get back to competing - I completely relate to breaking your hiatus on a Math variant contest :)
Gaurav: My advise helped! Good to know. Also, kudos on a solid performance.
Some numbers: There were 235 participants, 78 from India. Players participated from 30 different countries with 69 participants finishing all 18 Sudokus. From the participants eligible for the finals, 8 of them finished.
Congratulations to Jakub, Hideaki and Kwaka for finishing in the top 3 ranks. I expected the time taken to be less, but not that less! You all continue to amaze me with your speed, especially Jakub in sprint formats. Congratulations to Jayant, Kishore, Rakesh for being the top 3 from the "official" participants. Also congrats to the participants like Gaurav, Prakhar and shera90 who are relatively new among the finishers.
Some notes about the puzzles:
Highest rated 6x6 - Product Sudoku - 9.38
Highest rated 9x9 - Product Sudoku - 8.85
I guess Product Sudoku was pretty popular in general. My personal favorites were the Arrow (because of the break-in) and Killer in the 6x6s and the Mathdoku in the 9x9s. Kishore noted the very reason I like the Mathdoku, because of the way 5 and 1 work together due to the theme, and Devarajan noted the Arrow 6x6 as the one he liked, so nice to see my favorites represented a little in the comments :)
The only Sudoku submitted with 100% accuracy was the 2nd 6x6 Standard Sudoku. Come on now, at least get all 6x6 Standards right :) As Yuhei pointed out, the Mathdoku 6x6 has the lowest accuracy at 84.84%. This is still pretty high for a low bar so that's fine. I guess some of you didn't note/use the "different operations" rule, and there was a doubt or two about it too. It should also be noted that Mathdoku 6x6 was submitted the highest number of times at 198, which is very unusual for an unfamiliar variant (it even beat all the Standard Sudokus!), so maybe that played a part in it too.
Anyway, that's the first LMI Monthly of 2015 done. Thanks again to all 235 participants, and to Rohan for testing the puzzles and Deb for all the site work. Thanks also to Rakesh for his input. Over to Rajesh for the next round in Feb 2015 (Neighbours). |

So the winner jaku111 solved all the 18 sudokus in 31 minutes? Yes
Also what is the meaning of ratings given to puzzles (ratings and average ratings)?
Each puzzle can be rated on a scale of 1-10 by solvers. The ratings can be done during the test window and is open for some time after the test also.
Average rating is a weighted average of ratings in conjunction with LMI rating of the solver/rater. For example, if a person with LMI rating 800 gives a rating of 6 and a person with LMI rating 400 gives a rating of 10, the average rating will not be 8, it will be closer to 6. |
