There was mistake in our part. The regional round IPC 2011 is NOT scheduled at IIT Madras. We've updated the schedule.

Note that ISC 2011 is scheduled at IIT Madras.

Error in sample answer in 'dl.asp' pdf file

Sir in weight problem answer should be 25413 instead of 25134 as

weight 4 is in upper row as compare to 1 & 3...

"Enter the digits in the pans from left to right top to bottom"
Answers should be entered left to right first. If two weights are lying vertically up and down, they should entered top to bottom.
The sample answer is correct.

What is the difference between the "official results" http://logicmastersindia.com/IPC2011/pot_score.asp and "all results" http://logicmastersindia.com/IPC2011/pot_score.asp?showall=true

There is also a difference for the scores shown. In the official results, my score (from my techfest id) is shown to be 0/0 (ie i did not attempt anything). But if I check all results, my correct scores (and the answers which i submitted) are displayed correctly.

Before the test started we had it "19/12/2010 4pm".
Later we changed it to "20/12/2010 2pm" so that people can practice.
If you are serious about the championship, you should ask your questions before the test.
No 'official' test can be open for 24 hours.

And please write in English.

As everyone would have noticed, there are 15 types of Puzzles appeared in the practice test.
In each of the regional prelims rounds, 10 of the 15 types will appear.
In each of the regional final round, 10 of the 15 types will appear.
The types in these 2 round will differ. But there won't be any new types than what appeared in the practice test.

LMI will not release any booklet for these regional rounds.

regarding the regional round held in mumbai on 7-8th jan
there were 10 puzzles for selecting top 40 out of all and for another 10 puzzles for selecting top 8
but for in top 8 round it was just 1 puzzle elimination round. It is like one who was comfortable with closed loop puzzle, he didd it fast and thats it
how can 1 puzzle justify the performance of winner compared to others who might be much better in majority of other types of puzzle compared to the winner

Yes, we came to know about it. We can't do much now (but can only try not to make this happen in next year)
We will increase the number of players from the online round. A post on this will follow soon.

Vishal, if you've already qualified from Kanpur, you don't need to appear in Bangalore regional round OR in Online Prelims.

You've to appear in National finals. Dates for the same is not yet announced.

Swaroop, and others :

We have not finalized all the details. There are some issues we need to fix before we can decide. We don't want to post half-based information right now.
And like we've always done, the moment we finalize, it will be available in the forum and we'll send out an email to all qualifiers as well.

You might say we are taking a lot of time to decide, but that is the truth.

Congratulations for getting selected for the National Finals. As already mentioned elsewhere in this forum, it is practically not possible to arrange accommodation for such a large gathering. All participants are requested to make their own arrangements for travel, transport, stay and food.

It is possible. But needs some amount of manual work.

I finished 3rd in the regional round (puzzle category) at IIT Bombay.

At IIT Bombay, we were informed that the top 3 will qualify for the national finals - was relaxed about the whole thing till today when I saw the list of invitations, and found that it did not incorporate this top 3 per region rule.

I was looking at another thread, and it seems that the declaration "top 3 = qualification for nationals" was indeed made elsewhere as well.
(adityasaraf007's post in http://www.logicmastersindia.com/forum/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=2...)

Now, I don't know what to do as I did not participate in the online round either.

ABC Connection - You don't need to know if all cells have to be used to solve the puzzle

Paint-By-Number - Yes, clues are in order. Will change the instruction.

Hi,
In the Queens Park puzzle it is mentioned that "A queen does not block another queen."
Then in that case R2C4 = 4 instead of 3, R2C5 = 5 instead of 4 and R4C4 = 3 instead of 2
I think it should rather say "A queen blocks another queen".

Please verify this.

Thanks
Ravi.

Sorry about that statement "A queen does not block another queen".
It is not necessary, and moreover confusing.

The correct instruction will read
"Place X number of queens into the grid
so that none of them stands on
a number and each number
equals to the number of
directions from which the given
square is attacked by a queen.
A queen attacks to arbitrary
distance horizontally, vertically
and diagonally.
"

It is important to note that the number represents number of directions from which it can be attacked.
It doesn't represent number of queens that can attack the square.

Hope it is clear.

Note that in the championship it is not necessary to mark the start or end. If the path correctly is drawn, you will get full points.

Swaroop, in "NEWS"... For W-E, it need not necessarily be in the same row. In a specific region, if you are to place W-E, just make sure W is on the left hand-side and E on the right hand-side. It may or may not be in the same row. Similarly, if you see R2C4 and R3C5, N-S they are not placed in the same column.

I hope that answers your doubt.

Puzzle types will be exactly same. No more variations of even those mentioned.
In Round1 and Round2, there will be 1 puzzle from each type.
In Round3, there will be 2 puzzles from each type, one easy and one not-so

We'll publish an Information Booklet which will specify all these and the points distribution. It will take few days.

ABC Connection: Do all cells have to be used, or can some cells remain empty?

Paint-By-Number: Are the clues in the same order as seen from the given direction?

ABC Connection - You don't need to know if all cells have to be used to solve the puzzle

Paint-By-Number - Yes, clues are in order. Will change the instruction.

I had the same question for Anglers - Do all the cells have to be used or some may remain empty?

Is the answer same? ;)

Count the sum of given digits outside. If its equal to the number of cells, then no blank cells :D

The reason it is specified for Round2 is because I had to explain the partial points. Otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned that.

I can do that for Round1/3, but will it be really useful for you in planning / making a strategy, I'll do that. let me know.

Many participants don't read forum, and it will be unfair to publish something about the puzzles here.
Sorry.

As such, if we publish the grid sizes beforehand, it will probably be first of its kind.

Since, i am new to puzzles, wanted to pick and choose which to concentrate on , like points grid size also indicate the complexity of a puzzle,
The grid sizes /range in some cases are surely useful, frameless sudoku, different sums, where combinations are needed
Also if posting in forum is a concern, updated IB is as an option ,open to other view points,

I must be sleeping when I wrote that we can't publish here. Obviously, as you said, we can update the IB

Utkaarsh, let me emphasize that the grid size will not reveal anything about puzzle complexity. As a sample, if I say the Frameless sudoku is 9X9, it doesn't signify anything about its complexity. It is only points that tell you more about difficulty.

For players who are new to puzzles, it is important to form a strategy to solve the types you are more comfortable with, irrespective of the grid size or points.

Hey everyone. Today on The Griddle I posted a new puzzle that may serve as good practice for the masyu-fence puzzle:

Shotgun Slitherlink

In this variation there's one additional twist: all the numeric clues consist of a 2 directly to the left of a 3, to form several instances of "23" throughout the grid. Every place that a 23 can legally be placed in the grid, the clues are given.

I also have additional masyu-fence puzzles (that I call "shotgun slitherlink") on my site which you can find here.

Happy puzzling!

Any particular reason puzzles of Round 2 are 20x20? I understand the concept is big grids, but was 20 chosen as a random round figure or does it have any significance? Just for trivia sake...

Tiger in the Woods
One rule I wanted to confirm that, can the ending square be in the middle or it should always be touching a wall?
e.g. attaching the puzzles from Brazil Puzzle Championship where ending square is not touching the wall or black square.
See the following answer booklet

I think the players want to know if the ending cell can be 'anywhere'. There can be another solution then.

This is not allowed. The path can stop only near the wall or a black square.
Also, the end point must not have visited earlier.

Look at all rows and coloumns with A and B as clues.....
means R1, R2, C2, C4
C cannot be placed in 1 and last cells of these rows and columns...
with this C cannot be placed in R1C1, R1C4, R2C1, R2C4 therefore in first two rows C has to be in second and third column.
Again with the same logic C cannot be placed at R1C2, thus place C at R1C3 & R2C2.....
Now its simple.

I was solving the puzzles of Offline finals Round 3. I managed to solve all except NEWS (I tried the small one only, without success) and the big frameless (which I will need to solve on paper). Overall, very nice puzzles. For me, the best of the lot were the polyword (took a lot of time for solving), creek (elegant solution) and digit battleships (nice play with numbers) - the bigger grid in each case.

I hope someone can help with some baby steps for the small grid of NEWS.

Hi Rakesh,

According to me, you are not thinking :-)

1: Look at the R2C5-R3C4-R3C5 region. It cannot have 'W' and 'N'. So 'E' will be in R2C5 and 'S' in R3C4.
2: Exactly similarly, the R4C3-R5C2-R5C3 region will have 'E' in R4C3 and 'S' in R5C2.
3: The square region with 'W' has to have a 'N' in R2C3.
4: The R3C1-R4C1-R4C2 region cannot have 'E' and 'W'. Hence R3C1 is 'N' and R4C1 is 'S'.

You should be able to complete it now.

Thanks Rohan.

I was actually thinking ...but I had not interpreted the rules correctly (even though this topic was discussed earlier)...I was thinking that a S can come below a W... I thought the only constraints are that W should be to the left of E and N should be above S...but thats not correct...I should be able to solve it now.
