Most published crosswords use blocked grids, in which words must be separated by black cells; however, some published crosswords use barred grids, in which letters from different words can be in adjacent cells (and are labeled with a thick bar between the cells). They cannot. There must be at least one blank cell separating different words. This will be added to the instructions.
