Sudoku Mahabharat Round 5 is over. Thanks to everyone for participating. Thank you especially to Dave, Swaroop, Richard, Kishore, Gaurav, Akash, Nikaash and Devarajan, Yuhei for the compliments about the puzzles and other feedback. I've been a bit busy over the weekend but I've been keeping an eye on things and am glad to see that the newer solvers seem to have enjoyed the contest. When we thought of organizing this tournament that was the main goal. The contest was easier for veterans than previous rounds, but I had a feeling that I'd need to make it that way if I wanted the newer solvers to solve more, since we are more familiar with the tricks of Math variations. Overall, I think the contest has achieved that and its nice to see that many veterans have seemed to enjoy the sprint challenge too.

Richard: Glad you chose my test to get back to competing - I completely relate to breaking your hiatus on a Math variant contest :)

Gaurav: My advise helped! Good to know. Also, kudos on a solid performance.

Some numbers: There were 235 participants, 78 from India. Players participated from 30 different countries with 69 participants finishing all 18 Sudokus. From the participants eligible for the finals, 8 of them finished.

Congratulations to Jakub, Hideaki and Kwaka for finishing in the top 3 ranks. I expected the time taken to be less, but not that less! You all continue to amaze me with your speed, especially Jakub in sprint formats. Congratulations to Jayant, Kishore, Rakesh for being the top 3 from the "official" participants. Also congrats to the participants like Gaurav, Prakhar and shera90 who are relatively new among the finishers.

Some notes about the puzzles:
Highest rated 6x6 - Product Sudoku - 9.38
Highest rated 9x9 - Product Sudoku - 8.85

I guess Product Sudoku was pretty popular in general. My personal favorites were the Arrow (because of the break-in) and Killer in the 6x6s and the Mathdoku in the 9x9s. Kishore noted the very reason I like the Mathdoku, because of the way 5 and 1 work together due to the theme, and Devarajan noted the Arrow 6x6 as the one he liked, so nice to see my favorites represented a little in the comments :)

The only Sudoku submitted with 100% accuracy was the 2nd 6x6 Standard Sudoku. Come on now, at least get all 6x6 Standards right :) As Yuhei pointed out, the Mathdoku 6x6 has the lowest accuracy at 84.84%. This is still pretty high for a low bar so that's fine. I guess some of you didn't note/use the "different operations" rule, and there was a doubt or two about it too. It should also be noted that Mathdoku 6x6 was submitted the highest number of times at 198, which is very unusual for an unfamiliar variant (it even beat all the Standard Sudokus!), so maybe that played a part in it too.

Anyway, that's the first LMI Monthly of 2015 done. Thanks again to all 235 participants, and to Rohan for testing the puzzles and Deb for all the site work. Thanks also to Rakesh for his input. Over to Rajesh for the next round in Feb 2015 (Neighbours).

So the winner jaku111 solved all the 18 sudokus in 31 minutes?
Also what is the meaning of ratings given to puzzles (ratings and average ratings)?
I am new to this website and don't know how to interpret the results

Yes


Each puzzle can be rated on a scale of 1-10 by solvers. The ratings can be done during the test window and is open for some time after the test also.

Average rating is a weighted average of ratings in conjunction with LMI rating of the solver/rater. For example, if a person with LMI rating 800 gives a rating of 6 and a person with LMI rating 400 gives a rating of 10, the average rating will not be 8, it will be closer to 6.
