The dates for the IPC 2010 have not been announced as yet.
Typically the IPC is organized in August- September every year.
Watch out this space for more information, and if you are registered on this side then you need not worry, since we will broadcast a message announcing information regarding the IPC well before the event.

I have a request for the organizers. Can you open IPC in a two or three days as an online tests? Certainly the 12th September I will not be at home and, you know, I have to defend my international title.

As part of our regular Monthly tests, we have 2 Puzzle Tests planned before IPC2010.

Broken Pieces on 28th and 29th September
EverGreens II on 4th and 5th September

Both of these will be online events and will be conducted similar to IPC2010.

If you are new to IPC or LMI events, it is strongly suggested that you participate in these tests to get familiar with the online system.

These 2 tests will expose you to several things, including
• How to download the IB and Puzzle Booklet?
• How to get the password for Puzzle Booklet?
• How to submit the answers?
• And most importantly, how do you prepare and plan for the event.

<<<< For all non Indian participants >>>>

Since the IPC is mainly for the selection of the Indian team for the WPC it will be open for Indian participants only between 14:00 and 16:30 IST on 12th September

However after the official test has been completed we will open the test for all foreign participants for 24 hours from 12th September, 17:30 IST till 17:30 IST on 13th September. All Indian results in this duration will not be considered for selection to the national team.

If you find the official timings comfortable then you are free to participate during the official test too.

Rajesh, I dont think there is any worry with regards to overloading of the server, we have not faced any overloading issues in any of the monthly tests. and it is unlikely that a highly drastic change will be there in the number of foreign players participating.

In the monthly tests, test remains open for 48 hours. If consider that there are 160 participants then on the average, people submitting the answers will be around 4/hour. The test will be open for 2 hours and say 100 people participate and all submitting the answers at the same, it may overload server. Hopefully LMI server will be able to take this load.

The puzzles have been divided into five groups.
The first group is dedicated to Sudoku, which is definitely one of the most popular puzzle type. A couple of the Sudoku concepts have been borrowed from Jan Mrzowski's blog and from the Polish Puzzle Championship 2010.

The next section is for Basic Variants which the participants are very likely to have seen before even in newspapers.

The third section has observational and word puzzles, like spot differences, word search which I am sure most of you must have solved when you were kids :)

The fourth section is dedicated to Puzzle types from the Polish Puzzle Championship in accordance to the fact that WPC 2010 will be hosted by Poland.

The last section is again a section of basic variants which have commonly occured in past Polish Championships.

Hope you all have a great time solving these puzzles.

Please go through the Instruction Booklet carefully and do post any doubts regarding the puzzle instructions answer format etc. on the forum.

There are no bonus points for the official rankings in the IPC.

We will include a bonus of 10 points per minute saved in the rankings which include all non Indian participants.

In case participants finish all puzzles correctly within the alloted time then the tie will be broken based on the time stamp of the last correctly submitted answer.

Rajesh, There will be numbers on all 4 sides of the figure.

The numbers on the left and bottom indicate the number of corners (turns ) and the numbers on the right and top of the figure indicate the number of sides of the loop.

The purpose of the IB is to give an idea of the type of puzzle and inform the participants of the answer key. If anyone wants practice material, google search is the best option.

I believe so much effort has been spent on it by the Organizers that you cannot just ridicule it. As mentioned by Rishi, most of these puzzles are standard ones. And if you are serious enough and have been trying puzzles long enough, you would know the rules of a puzzle just by the name of it. And if not, you cannot comment on others efforts.

Agree with Rishi that idea of IB to give idea regarding the puzzle type and answer format. Most of the puzzle are standard puzzle and new variations are taken from Polish Championship which is mentioned in the IB.

Neeraj, if in a row the sequence of 1,2,3 occurs, then that sequence cannot repeat in any other row. similarly, the sequence of numbers in a every column is unique. Hope this helps.

If you enter all 5 differences and if one turns out wrong then the entire answer will be treated as incorrect.

On a lighter note Rohan, once you have found 4 differences, why would you want to waste time on locating the 5th difference

The size of the puzzle can be estimated for some of the puzzles
Easy as ABCD is(A~D) in final puzzle.
Dominos is (0~8) in final puzzle.
You can safely assume that Kakuro will not be as small as the puzzle given in the example

@neeraj

The rules do not require two sets of 1-2-3 in each row/column.

The rule only states that in the combination cannot be repeated in any horizontal 3X1 box or any vertical 3X1 box.

In fact this site is must have in every puzzlers list. I am practicing puzzles on this site from 2004 onwards and till now there is not a single puzzle type for which I could solve all the puzzles. Hats off to Otto Janko for maintaining this site very well.

Rajesh, the domino sets will be given in the PB... for Battleships the IB clearly states, and I quoet from the IB "The fleet is shown below, one 4 unit
battleship, two 3 unit cruisers, three 2 unit destroyers and four 1 unit submarines."

Hope that clarifies.

Thank you so much for opening the time window for international players . I had my alarm set for 3 AM so I could start at 3:30 AM, but now I can get good night sleep.

Good luck to all players!

The set of battleships shown in the puzzle booklet (along side the grid) is incorrect. The correct set includes one 4-unit battleship, two 3-unit cruisers, three 2-unit destroyers and four 1-unit submarines.

Note that the grid is correct.

After the official test is over, IPC will be open for international participants (and for Indians who missed it during the official time).
17:30 12-Sep till 17:30 13-Sep.

To be fair to everyone, we request the official participants not to discuss about the puzzles before 17:30 on 13-Sep.
They should refrain from discussing about answers / difficulties of puzzles / strategies / tricks / password / uniqueness / errors during this period.

I initially submitted with 7 digits. And since it was wrongly erroring out, I submitted without the digit already included in the question (i.e. the digit '1' in the fourth column which was already displayed in the grid in the question).

Since, I guess there could be more people like me, therefore, IMHO both XXX1XXX & XXXXXX should be accepted as correct.

The characters given for the answer key are differently set for Battleships in the IB and in the PB. In the IB characters start on the left of the grid from 'A' and continue on the top of the grid from 'I'. While in the PB characters start on the top from 'A' and continue on the left from 'L'. In the IB the answer key is getting the first part of the coordinate from the left and then from the top. I used the same procedure to generate my answer key (first character from left, second from top) and I got 0 points to my answer. Is it because I should have got the first coordinate from the top and the second from the left?

I am relatively new to the world of puzzling and enjoyed this competition immensely despite the fact that I got a relatively low score (practise makes perfect) I did wonder whether I could ask to be awarded the points for the LMI Fill puzzle as I believe I correctly identified the two unused words, but somehow managed to omit the last letter of the second word when typing in the answer (it is quite obvious which word it is meant to be). Just thought it might be worth asking! Thanks

Hi Sumit,

Thanks for the suggestion and taking part in the IPC.

The purpose of the National championship is to find the best in the Country and have the best team sent for the World Championships. The other monthly competitions that we host at LMI is treated more as friendly competitions and practice.

Thanks everybody for the wonderful response.
Let me take this opportunity to thank team working behind the scenes to make IPC 2010 happen.
The initial plan was of Deb participating in the IPC after a long time (post 2007), with me and Rishi organizing the IPC.
But Deb, being indispensable to the IPC team ended up creating a large number of puzzles and designing the submission interface. Some of these puzzles like the Divisible by 3, Equal to Sudoku ended up being the most appreciated puzzles as expected :)
Rishi chipped in with some of the puzzles even while on paternity leave and most importantly ensured that the server did not let us down during the test duration.
Also thanks to Kshitij Sharma for creating a couple of puzzles for the IPC, both of which were the first time he was creating puzzles for that type. Should serve as some inspiration for participants dabbling around with creating their own puzzles :)
On my part, I did most of the IB and PB compilation, which did leave a lot to be desired, but I'm sure the learning out here would come in good stead while organizing future championships.
And special thanks to Nikola who did not get a chance to defend his IPC 2009 title in giving us quick feedback on puzzle timings and also helping with the answer format.

Yo, thanks to the organizers, the puzzles were a lovely set, going through them felt like a cool breeze. I mean, not literally, but that is the closest I can describe it. Thanks again :)

Thanks to the IPC organizers.

Congrats to Thomas, Michael, Branko, Rohan, Rajesh, Gaurav and all these guys who are very good at puzzle
I'm not (yet?) a big fan of puzzles, but as there were a big part of sudoku, I decided to participate. I enjoy some of other puzzles, too

Congratulations to all winners and to all who participated! The puzzles were very nice and "newbies friendly". I had unfortunately power outage 15 minutes into the competition and solving with candle light in hope that the electricity will come back (it did the same minute the time for submission expired) was not best but still enjoybale. It was at least a nice practice and a good motivation to exted my horizons from sudoku only.
