Hi All , I am checking this website from a week ago but just register today. I love playing Sudoku very much. As I get to know that Indian Sudoku Championship 2015 is on 28 Jun its quite a bad news for me,since the champion players who are playing from 5 years or more the time frame for them is very much but players like me who only played Classic Sudoku's before is very short. As I try some test from monthy test section I get best ranked in Unlucky 13 test which is 6 in India with time 45:02 and others test my rank is very bad because of new sudoku variants which I have never seen before.

So my request to LMI team is that can ISC 2015 date be shifted if possible to 10 july or later.

An entire National Championship cannot be shifted because one person is new to variants. Imagine if someone joins LMI on 9th July. Should it then be shifted to 10th August? The best way to look at it is, this will be your first National Championship, so go in with minimal expectations and use it as a learning experience. The National Championships are held annually, so if this year doesn't go that well you have an entire year's time to get better for the next one. I encourage you to participate regularly and try to improve within the year rather than worrying about the top players from the start - its how I went about it when I started.

Hi. This is an online event. You can take part from your home. I guess you are talking about Times Sudoku Championship. If yes, there is no announcement regarding TSC as of now. You can follow the forum if any announcement in this regard is made.

Sudoku Mahabharat has no bearing on the selection of the Indian team.

The team will be selected on the basis of the ISC. But do note that those selected from the ISC will not be sponsored.

TSC will be an independent event from which four participants will be sponsored for the WSC. These four participants will include 2 experienced participants and 2 new-comers.
Experienced participants are defined as the participants who have previously participated in a WSC.

Hi Amit,
What is this 2+2 rule. Shouldn't the best 4 represent India at the WSC & improve our chances of a top-3 finish this year?

The 2+2 rule is for sponsorship. While LMI is in control of A-team selection (as Amit has said, the Indian team will be from ISC), Times as a sponsor will (and in my opinion, should) have a say in who they sponsor. So, the best 4 will be asked to represent India. Its just that that's not necessarily the sponsored team.

So, is the 2+2 rule an idea put forward by TOI?

From what I understand, the 4 best finishers in ISC will be India A team.
TOI will decide (based on TSC results) who they want to sponsor.
The common set of players could be 0,1,2,3,4 (theoretically).

In true or lie sudoku, r6c5, r7c4 must be 9 because of 8 at r8c5. Then r2c6 must be 9. r1c8 must be 8 because of 9 at r8c8. Then r2c9 must be 7 and r3c8 must be 5. Then I am not finding a place for 5 in box 6.
Where I went wrong.

All shapes need to be used?
No restriction on number of triminoes?
Triminoes can touch diagonally?

As per rules if 9 is next to arrow cell with arrow pointing towards 9 then arrow cell will contain 1. If arrow cell is 2 cells apart from 9 in the direction of arrow then it will contain 2 and so on.
Below link contains the solution of the one of Search 9 Sudoku which will help you understand the rules clearly.

Not that I know of. Why not just print out the many that are on this and other sites? It'll help you more to solve on paper anyway since most Championships have only on-paper solving.

Edit: Just remembered Rishi released an app recently. I'll allow him to post details.

Though I have given the link to the app for android, my personal suggestion is to practice on paper rather than on mobile devices. During ISC you will be mostly solving on paper and better to be prepared for that.

Look at the clues on the left side. Since they are in pairs, the first digit in C1 has to be one amongst the clues. Hence look at digits that occur only once in the clues and you can safely assume that digit will be the first digit visible in its corresponding row. You can proceed from there :)

For Triomino, begin solving for the digits 1 to 6 like a classic sudoku. Once you can proceed no further then look how the black cells play a role and you will be able to proceed.

For Deficit-Surplus, ignore the shapes to begin with and concentrate only rows and columns. Since all digits from 1 to 8 have to be in any given row or column, that would be the best start.

Shapes Sudoku was present under the name Trio Sudoku in Parallel Universe - http://logicmastersindia.com/lmitests/?test=M201404S

For Filler Sudoku the closest link is Black & White Sudoku from Sudoku Day - http://logicmastersindia.com/lmitests/?test=M201409S . It is basically Filler with a sums rule added.

This isn't really something that's doable. Any variant can be made very easy or very difficult, so the fastest time is too dynamic to be a fact that is useful for anyone to determine the difficulty. I'd suggest to just wait for the Points Table to be published in the next version of the Instruction Booklet, this typically gives an idea of relative difficulty of all the Sudokus that will appear.

Hi. There are two methods where you can solve and submit the answers in ISC.

1. You can print the question booklet, solve it and submit the marked rows and columns answers in the text box provided.

2. You can use the Online Flash interface where you can solve the sudoku without any need of printer.

If you see the above post by user doku, you will have the illustration of both the methods. The first one is the Flash interface and the second one is the text box format where you can solve and submit the marked row/column combination.

For deficit surplus it's not clear what the rules are for areas with exactly 8 cells. Must the digits 1 - 8 appear or can we not operate under that assumption? In other words, are repeat digits in 8 cell areas forbidden? Thanks.

Right, there is an ambiguity.
The rule should be "In regions with less than or equal to 8 cells, digits should not repeat"

Triomino (specifically Ashish's) - Note exit points for corner boxes. If a triomino 'goes out' of the corner box, there needs to be another place where it 'comes in' to make up the numbers. So if there aren't two exit points, the box must contain the entire triomino within itself. As a general tip for this variant I suggest having two sets of markings, one for cells which will contain a Triomino, and the other for cells which must contain digits (which isn't necessarily limited to just the cells with givens/solved digits).

Odd Even View - Where there are two clues, the rules force one of those clues to be in the first cell from that direction. If there is a side that is entirely double-clued like the example in the Instructions booklet, then whatever digit occurs only once (e.g. 8) needs to be in the first cell of that direction, since, using the first sentence, it can't be anywhere else. Also, as a general tip here, it is useful to have two sets of markings, one for 'cell containing odd digit' and another for 'cell containing even digit', these can be useful without placing a digit at all. For instance if you solve the IB one, you should get 2 in R9C1 which forces R7R8R9C3 to be odd and that can be marked to keep track.

Actually, generally speaking, all boxes must have 0, 2 or 3 exit points. No box can have 1 exit point.

Please do not complicate. There is no wrapping.

In Instruction booklet, R8C9 is given as 1. Not sure how you are determining options for R8C9.

Did the Instructions Booklet (IB) provide enough information about participating in ISC? Yes, mostly.
Did you understand the Sudoku variations rules and examples from the IB? I understood all of them.
Did you find enough easy Sudokus to solve during the championship? No, there were really few easy puzzles.
Did you find enough easy / familiar variations to solve during the championship? Yes, there were many of them.
After your experience in ISC, are you going to participate in future championshiops or contests at LMI? Most likely

I loved OEV. Wasn't that difficult as IB or Rajesh's and hence optimally suited !!

Best puzzles:

1. OE View
2. Anti Knight - Exquisitely designed
3. Extra Regions
4. Search 9 - Started 2 times as I forgot the first 9 for 45 degree arrows

That puts an end to ISC 2015!What a delightful contest!.My favourites of the set were Diagonal 1,Extra-Regions,Arrow and Killer.I had a good time solving the rest too but these stood out in terms of solving fun and design.

Diagonal 1 had the total top half empty.Very hard and nice.Extra regions was innovatively designed utilizing the concept of Buddy cells well .Killer had something going in it with the non-caged cells in each box and last but not least, I always find arrows to be very pleasant when they are longer and the min./max. of each cell on the arrow stem is to be decided.

On a personal note,I rarely had any hiccups on any of the sudokus.I was confident of completing the set with just the Shapes to be done and dusted and about 12 mins in the offing. But as things would have it,I failed to see a simple straightforward deduction for about 6mins.Lack of mental stamina maybe!phew!!!But this little thing never blemished my experience of the contest in any way and I don't even repent now of failing to see it .

After the contest, I had a go at the shapes and there were things like Sword-fish that I noted which fascinated me a lot.I thanked my stars that I gave it at the last as I would have been stuck forever.PS:I am still stuck in the shapes and yet to complete it!But I just admire it for its unique construction.Great work!

Thanks to Deb and to all the authors for creating such an excellent test and making the weekend very enjoyable.Great work addressing the queries promptly too.

Kishore

Seriously though, need to get back my accuracy before the WSC.

Did the Instructions Booklet (IB) provide enough information about participating in ISC? Yes, mostly.
Did you understand the Sudoku variations rules and examples from the IB? I understood most of them.
Did you find enough easy Sudokus to solve during the championship? Yes, some of them were easy. I would have liked more easy puzzles.
Did you find enough easy / familiar variations to solve during the championship? Yes, some of them were familiar. I would have liked more familiar types.
After your experience in ISC, are you going to participate in future championshiops or contests at LMI? Most likely

Hi. You can post queries in the TSC forum. The format, in general will always be a surprise since it cannot be restricted to users in LMI alone.

Yes, since there's an official results page and an unofficial (+international) results page, you have the choice of the link to go to from the comment the link points to.

You should be able to put lot of 2s (e.g. in R9C6, R8C8).

You can also use In-Out shortcut after proceeding for a while.

The ISC is free and open to anyone with an internet connection. Beyond the 197 no one is prevented from participating.

Also, the reason this is the Indian Sudoku Championship is that it is organized by the Indian Affiliate of the World Puzzle Federation.

Got it since its my first time and how I can get such a rank Is you guys have any proof of the others top players if they cheated or not.

There are many sudoku solvers available on net classic ,diagonals ,killers etc and ISC 2015 IB released 11 days before the competition an expert programmer can prepare all sudoku solvers with in such a time frame.

OR

anyone can take help from any number of person like printing all 12 pages and disturbing to 12 person and submitting as one player ID

but I have not done any cheat , neither use any solver nor taken any other person help.

Its not my place to comment on the rest of your concerns, but yes there is proof for the top players, since all of the top 10 have also excelled at offline tournaments like the Times Sudoku Championship and also the World Sudoku Championship, and the results are consistent with the ones here. Is it possible for you to participate in the Times Sudoku Championship that's coming up soon? If your result there is as impressive it is an easy way to prove things.

The puzzles being too easy is just due to a selfish preference, since I feel a harder difficulty suits me better :P The quality really was great, even down to the easiest ones like the True Or Lie Sudoku which had a really good simple theme. Thanks to all the authors/organizers/testers.

ISC 2015 is over

ISC 2015 was held to determine the National Champion and Indian A-team for the World Sudoku Championship. Rishi Puri won with an impressive score of 1369.6, finishing all 27 puzzles in 97 minutes. Prasanna Seshadri was the runner-up, finishing in 112 minutes, with Rohan Rao finishing in 119 minutes for 3rd place. The top 3 were the only ones among the official rankings who finished the set but Kishore Kumar came within one puzzle of a finish, with 930 points, rounding up the top 4 for the Indian A-Team.
Many of our junior team made their ISC debut this year. Aditi Seshadri (25th), Hemant Malani (28th), Shristi Kejriwal (33rd) and Kartik Reddy (84th) all posted good strong scores in the official section of the Championship while Shambo Debnath and Pranav Kamesh also had decent performances during the unofficial section.
The unofficial section was topped by Tiit Vunk of Estonia, who finished just 8 minutes faster than Rishi, whose score was enough to get him a 4th place in the International rankings. Kota Morinishi (Japan) and Jakub Ondrousek (Czech Republic) were 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Congratulations to all the winners and the debutants!

Thank you everyone for participating. We hope you enjoyed the contest. Please let us know any feedback regarding puzzles/format/etc. and feel free to rate the puzzles on the submission page.

I agree that the overall difficulty is little less than what we have seen in previous years. Just by going by the time taken by best Indian to complete the set,
2013 - 125 minutes
2014 - 106 minutes
2015 - 97 minutes

In the hindsight, I could have included few more difficult Sudokus, without increasing the number of Sudokus.

Certificates & Prizes

As we had done last year, we'll be sending participation certificates to all the official participants on their registered email IDs. Also, as we had done last year, we are making the hard copies of the certificates, along with the organizer's sign, available at the price of Rs. 99. The account details will be sent in the mail with the participation certificate. Unlike last year, we have set a deadline for our convenience. All requests for hard copies, along with details of preferred name, and mailing address, need to be mailed in reply to the Participation certificate email by 31st August. We will then courier all of them together in the 1st week of September.

In addition to this, the top 10 official participants will receive a prize each. Details about the prize will be announced here at a later date, and the prizes will be sent along with certificates in the 1st week of September.

What did you think about the puzzle quality of the test? Very nice
What was your opinion of the booklet formatting and printing? Just right

Some lines in several grids contained extra half cell long endings when printed. This has happened also before. Grids 8 and 22 could not be solved from the print-out without seeing them on the screen.

Yes, I've faced this problem too. I believe it is a problem specific to certain printers, but its weird that it happens.

Cheeck for 2 and then 4 in r7. Hint is to see the places these digits can't be placed due to intersection of classic & anti knight rules using box 6.

also, once we have established that (r5,c1) & (r5,c3) can only be 9 and 5 (after placing 1 in (r5,c5) and confirming that (r5,c7) & (r5,c9) can only be 3 & 8) but since one of (r4,c5) & (r6,c5) has to be 9, we can eliminate 9 from (r5,c3).

We were a bit pre-occupied with starting/scheduling Sudoku Mahabharat & Puzzle Ramayan, we will get to this in a few days. Sorry about the delay. The dates for requesting hard copies will also be extended appropriately.

An email has been sent to all participants with your e-certificates. Please reply to it if you want a hard copy, with the necessary details requested in the mail.

I am yet to reach back home since the WPC (stopped at Mumbai for a week), and I suppose I'll need to sign the IPC ones. So a little while longer, because we want to send as many as possible together (ISC+IPC).
