Country : India | Some notes about April Contest 2023Please note this contest will have a slightly different format than regular LMI tests.
Key differences from regular LMI tests:
1. There is no IB (i.e. no Instructions Booklet). If you have any questions about any puzzle, please ask here in the forum.
2. The PB (Puzzle Booklet) does not have any password.
3. You can download the pdf and start solving. Login at the contest page and click on "Start test" to start submitting.
4. There is no time limit other than the 1 week duration. You can submit until the contest ends.
5. There will be some optimizer puzzles. Other puzzles will be very hard (compared to regular LMI tests)
6. Same scores will have same rank (i.e. early submissions do not count towards rank)
Other important points:
7. There shall be no instant grading in this test.
8. There shall be no online solving interface (like penpa) provided for this test.
9. The score page shall be made available later.
10. There shall be 10 pages in the Puzzle Booklet.
11. Participants can submit answers any number of times. The last submission shall be considered for scoring.
12. There shall be no separate notification on submitting answers.

What is going on with this contest? It seems open, but without a puzzle booklet, it is effectively closed. And the messages in the discussion thread are not readable, even when you are logged in. Can we have some information? |

Country : France | OK! So that means half shaded cell may touch a shaded cell, at least diagonally!
In fact, my initial problem was that I inderstood ths conditions as :
- all double cells must have a shaded half and an unshaded half;
- all shaded cells and all shaded half of double cells do not touch.
But these two conditions cannot both be verified. If they were, this creates problem around the magenta and the lemon M.
So I have a new question: if a shaded half of a double celle can touch a shaded cell (or another shaded half of a double cell), is it necessarily diagonally, or can it also be orthogonally? Am I clear? |
|

Country : India | Shaded cells cannot touch orthogonally. They can touch diagonally. (This is for puzzle 9) |

OK Thanks. The puzzle booklet says something else ("The shaded cells do not touch, not even diagonally" ). It will be corrected, I suppose ... |

9-6/3=7. The priority of operations is standard. |

Concretely, if for some digits A,B,C,D,E one had the identities A_PLUS_BC=DEF and ED=CB_PLUS_AF, where the latter can be formed by writing the former around a circle, cutting in a different place, and reading in the other direction, would this be a valid solution ? Or is the only legal way to write the identity A_PLUS_BC=DEF to actually write "A_PLUS_BC=DEF=" around the circle (with an extra equal sign) and both expressions must be formed by cutting the circle at an "=" sign ?

You can't break the expression wherever you want. If you write down your expressions many times in a row (or read in a circle an infinite number of times ), then you should get the right equality. In the example , you can write 68=45_PLUS_23=68=45_PLUS_23=68= etc. |

The circle is used in the construction of letter palindromes, which are read an infinite number of times clockwise and counterclockwise, but sometimes giving different phrases. In Russia, such constructions are called cyclodromes. |

Ok, thanks. But, uh, wait. Now I am concerned. Is there, then, a requirement to have at least two equal signs?
Otherwise, something like '98765*43210=' around the circle produces a valid equality when reading around the circle infinitely many times: 98765*43210=98765*43210=98765*43210=...
But this seems to violate the spirit of the puzzle, or at least there isn't much optimization left to do in this version.
And for completeness, can you clarify what exactly you expect in the answer key? The example given for the answer format only has one = sign given for each direction, even though there are two reading around the circle, so do we answer by giving what you get by cutting the circle open at an '=' sign and reading everything from just after that '=' sign to just before it, but not including the '=' sign along which we cut?
Sorry to be picky about details, but I think people spending time on this puzzle want to make sure that they are working on the correct version of it...
Thanks,Denis |

You must have 2, 3 or more equal signs. You can also get the equality 1 = 3-2 = 5-4 = with three equal signs and write it out endlessly in a circle. But at the same time, in the opposite direction, it must also be true. |

It is allowed to use arithmetic signs on both sides of the equal sign. |

Country : The Netherlands | For puzzle 5 (Navigation), the instruction says to form 8 connected areas along the grid lines, however only 6 letters are given. Does this imply that the other two regions do not occur in the 2 columns of the answer format (column 4 and 9)? Since the answer page also asks for digits and/or letters A-F (rather than A-H for 8 areas instead of 6). |

I gave an example with 1 to demonstrate three equal signs. This example is more successful: 7-6=5-4=3-2=7-6=5-4=3-2= etc. |

Quote from the text: "Create a Minesweeper puzzle with a unique solution". Oh, that's so disappointing. It would have been more elegant to have to create a puzzle whose solution is unique when one takes into account the requirement that there should exist a loop (but which may have multiple solutions as a pure minesweeper puzzle ) -- so much so that I assumed that it was actually the task. Oh well, I shall redo it to make something that is also unique as a minesweeper puzzle. I was so happy with my submission, but it's definitely not unique at all as a minesweeper. |

In this part of the grid, the line behaves like in the puzzle "Every second turn". If there was a turn in a circle, then the next turn will be in a cell without a circle, then again in a circle, etc. |

"It is also possible for the line to make a turn and leave the grid, in this case it can turn in the next grid before meeting a circle."
Is there a vice versa too ? When the last turn before leaving the grid is a circle ?
Isn't it more accurate to say :
"It is also possible for the line to make a turn and leave the grid, in this case :
- if the last turn in the grid isn't a circle, it can turn in the next grid before meeting a circle.
- if the last turn in the grid is a circle, it can turn in the next grid at a circle"

PB says make a crossword. One, not several crosswords. If the words are not related to each other, then you will get several crosswords. |

"Create a Minesweeper puzzle with a unique solution in the 9x9grid"
Do we agree that the instructions to solve a Minesweeper include a given number of mines to find ? As in Puzzle 6 for exemple
A grid could have multiple solutions without that number of mines, but when it is given as an instruction, the solution can become unique
The grid I submitted needs that number to have a unique solution

Puzzle 11
"Create a Minesweeper puzzle with a unique solution in the 9x9grid"
Do we agree that the instructions to solve a Minesweeper include a given number of mines to find ? As in Puzzle 6 for exemple
A grid could have multiple solutions without that number of mines, but when it is given as an instruction, the solution can become unique
The grid I submitted needs that number to have a unique solution
Create a classic Minesweeper puzzle in which the number of mines is not given. |

Hi Stefano,
This is unacceptable. There must be at least one empty cell between two words. |

No, the squares should be inside the grid. |

Besides, I hope there are more details about how to create a crossword to make it clearer. |

If that is the case, do i send an email to logicmasteradmin@gmail.com as if the website was down?

Ya you can but let us know in the mail why you're unable to submit answers. |

The most obvious reason would be that everyone who started this contest before the end time was extended has had a countdown clock that expired a few hours ago and for us the LMI platform says the contest is over. (When the end of the contest was extended, the submission deadlines for those who had already started the contest did not get extended ). (As for myself I don't care because I finished everything I wanted to do, assuming no further surprises about previously unexplained rules that change the nature of any puzzles ).-- Denis Edited by auroux 2023-04-24 1:56 AM

Country : India | Oof I genuinely missed that the countdown clock and the end time setting are differently coded for this contest. We will try to reset it but yes we will accept submissions via email for now. Thanks for pointing this out. |

Country : The Netherlands | Thanks for the beautiful contest & congrats do Denis for the victory and everyone else on their efforts as well!
Moreover, I unfortunately submitted column 3 instead of 4 on accident for Navigation, but I have a downloaded image (with time stamp within contest time) of the correct solution that I took from Penpa after finishing the puzzle there, is there a way for me to claim those 6 points, Riad? Or is it just unfortunate? |
