What can the first building be in rows 1 and 3? That gives you info about row 5 which should help you progress.

Here's a start that you can focus upon.Digits 7,8 and 9 will be in R1C9/R3C9 and R4C9 in some order. These are the only places these digits can be in the last column. After this ,6 can only be in R6C9 in Column 9 considering the bottom 7 clue.

An easier way to look at it - R2,R5 and R9C9 form a 123 triplet, so anything in the other cells of C9 will block R2 and R5C9. Since only two places can be blocked for a 7 clue, these are your two places, and that means the remaining digits have to immediately be in order 4-5-6-7-8-9 in the other cells.

I have created one for my Sudoku Variants Series. You can find it here.

And there was a puzzle of this kind in the LMI-test Road to London from last year.

How well did the variants represent the theme of the test ? variations represented the theme well
What was your opinion of the distribution of easy/hard puzzles? Too many medium difficult puzzles
What did you think about the puzzle quality of the test? Very nice
Of the puzzles you solved/attempted, how well did the point values reflect the difficulty? Most puzzles were worth the right amount

There were some fun variations here that I hadn't seen before. I especially liked the 2-3 and 2-3-4 sudokus and the X-sums.

I felt that this test had harder classics and were under-valued compared to the Variants. This probably got accentuated by the fact that I just didn't solve the classics in the way they were meant to be solved.

I was doing the variants really well and suddenly I thought that I had completed all of the variants when actually I had completed only 4 of the 5 variant types . As a result, crossed over to the classics wherein I suffered a lot even at the 'hands' of a 2 pointer. In hindsight,I should have solved the 2-3-4 rather than persisting with the classics a lot.Got to submit a few classics in the dying moments and salvage some points. This test comes in the category of the hard sets like Evergreen(PR) and Maths(SM)

My favourites of the test are X-sums followed by skyscrapers.Really clean solve paths.Variants were really lovely and I enjoyed solving them a lot. Thanks for authoring the set Rishi.

nice outside variants, some new to me. A standard outside (1-2-3 outside for 9x9) would also have been highly desirable.

I feel the Classic Sudokus are tougher than the variants, which unfortunately I spent a long time. Overall nicely constructed sudokus and a great challenge for all.

One thing to remember is that since all the digits outside are given, the rows/columns with only one outside clue must have the 6/9 in the first or last cell. This is usually the best place to start.

Sorry for the delayed post.

Congrats to Rohan, Rakesh and Kishore for being the top 3 Indians and to Gotroch, Kota and and Kwaka for the top international players. It was really awesome to see such a close finish between the first two spots. Prasanna is excluded from the official ranking as he has a bye.

I really enjoyed creating this set.

There is some feedback that sudokus were hard. Many of you voted for 'too many hard puzzles'. While it is understandable but I need to add here that Tiit, who test solved it, completed the set in 43 minutes. Based on that it was decided that we would not make it any more easier.
Most of you voted for 'very nice puzzle quality' -- Appreciate the feedback.

The first and the last points of the feedback were unanimous mostly, so thank you for that.

Finally, I'm glad most of you enjoyed the puzzles. Nice to see 317 participants with 105 Indians.

I'm not sure what the last part means. Every Next to 6/9 Sudoku will have, outside each edge, a set of 7 double digit clues and 2 single digit clues, and the rows/columns with single digit clues will be the ones where 6/9 is in the 1st or last cell (this is easily explained - because everywhere else, 9 will have one cell before it and one cell after it)

Also one more request : Can the instruction booklets for the rounds be published a bit earlier, coz for beginners like me it takes time to understand the variants. Thanks

Sorry for the late reply. Thanks Prasanna for your valuable input. Just wanted to clear whether every Next to 6/9 Sudoku will have only one outside clue.

The above is only true if ALL clues are given. There can still be Next to 6/9 sudokus with not all clues given, or more than two single digit clues given.

I would argue that it's implied that if there's a clue at all in a given row or column, it will list all neighbours of 9 within that row or column. Otherwise, the rules would better be phrased along the lines of: "Clues outside the grid indicate numbers that must placed before or after the 9 within that row or column."

I'm sure someone will explore these variants soon!
