About the contest
  • This is an online only puzzle contest with 16 Voxas puzzles.
  • A new Voxas puzzle will be live in every 30 hours between 2nd April and 22nd April.
  • Cumulative points from each day's solving will determine the final scores.
  • There will be a leaderboard for early-birds, apart from the official one. Details here.
Voxas Rules
  • Divide the grid into regions of orthogonally connected cells, each of which must be either 1x2 or 1x3.
  • Some borders are given. These must divide two different regions.
  • Borders with white dots separate regions with the same size and orientation.
  • Borders with black dots separate regions with neither the same size nor the same orientation.
  • Borders with grey dots separate regions with either the same size or the same orientation, but not both.
Penpa Interface
  • Only the edges will be checked as part of solution checking.
  • Lines connecting the centers of cells are not needed.
  • It does not matter if given borders are traced or not.
Example Puzzle
Points to remember
  • Rule 1 - Each region must be a 1x2 or a 1x3. The image on the left is wrong because there is a 1x1 region and a non-rectangular region. The image on the right follows this rule correctly.
  • Rule 2 - Each white dot must separate two regions with the same size and orientation. The image on the left is wrong because a white dot separates two regions which aren't identical. The image on the right follows this rule correctly.
  • Rule 3 - Each black dot must separate two regions with different sizes and orientations. The image on the left is wrong because a black dot separates two regions which aren't different in both of these ways. The image on the right follows this rule correctly.
  • Rule 4 - Each grey dot must separate two regions with either the same size or orientation, but not both. The image on the left is wrong because a grey dot separates two regions which don't have exactly one trait in common. The image on the right follows this rule correctly.
History of Voxas
  • Voxas is a genre invented by Eric Fox, first appearing on his blog in July of 2021.
  • The name has no meaning. It's simply a made-up word.
Official Leaderboard Earlybirds Leaderboard
A B C
A is determined by player's rank on that day. The table below demostrates the link between rank and A.
B is puzzle difficulty indicator.
Players solving all 16 puzzles will always get 1600 points as B.
B for each puzzle will be calculated based on the following formula after the official time for the puzzle is over.
B for Nth puzzle = 1600 * (Avg of Top 10 players's time of Nth puzzle) / [ Sum of (Avg of Top 10 players's time of all puzzles) ]
First 100 players to submit the puzzle will get C as 100 to 1
Final Leaderboard considers cumulative of A + B for each day. Final Leaderboard considers cumulative of C for each day.
