Sudoku Mahabharat - Offline Finals - Expenses and donations

These are the expenses incurred by Sudoku Mahabharat. We wouldn't have been able to get it done without donations from the names listed. In addition to this, we have a donation from Bharath K too. LMI thanks all the individuals who have contributed towards sponsoring this successful event.

While this list shows that we can put together such events, and it is great that so many of the LMI regulars voluntarily contributed, relying on a few people contributing isn't a sustainable model. This is why we were talking at the SM finals about having a participation fee the next time, so that we can then look at organizing more events like this one.

Thanks to the people who contributed towards making this event happen and also a success. I think what we can do is to keep a registration charge of rs 500 for the whole set of online tests . So even if 100 people participate in the online tests, we would be having sufficient amount to organise the event successfully.

SM was a well organized nice event Congratulations to the organizers. The aim of the event should be inviting more participants and making the event more competitive. If charged many may not participate, and off line finals should also must be a free event, the aim should be reward for participation not a punishment So one must try to organize some sponsors for the event or try to generate some source of funds. I am totally unaware how LMI is managed. Hope some thing can be done in this reg.

Firstly, thank you :) Glad you enjoyed the event.

I'll note a few things here.
1. Participation fee is part of the WPC and WSC as well. The thought process here isn't to punish the participants but to sustain the event. The assumption is that the participants who enjoy the event (as with the WSC/WPC) would be ok with contributing a little in order to return to it, if the alternative was that the event wouldn't be held at all, and first timers will hopefully feel the expense is worth it if people who have experienced it last year are spending on the same. The aim has always been to get more people involved. But on some level that can't be done if its at the cost of a few individuals spending their own money each year to make it happen.

2. There is always an attempt for publicity and an attempt for sponsorship. Unfortunately, we haven't had much progress yet in this regard so the more realistic assumption to make is that we won't have the sponsors (and as illustrated in point 1, this is a problem at a higher level too). Of course, if we do get sponsors, then depending on coverage of expenses, the participation fee will also be reduced. Our preference isn't profit but sustenance and growth and I think that is clear enough from all the efforts made so far since 2009.

3. This is a more general note. 'how LMI is managed' was discussed in the open discussion after the finals, LMI is basically managed as a part-time passion project by some individuals who have their main jobs to prioritize. So, to be blunt, we are stretched all the time. The effort put in to organizing the SM finals for instance would likely have been either impossible or much more costly and stressful if it weren't for the fact that me and Rohan relocated to Bangalore recently and could assist Deb with the preparations. This is not meant to be an excuse, because we want to do these things and will continue putting in the efforts, and we have many aims in terms of future LMI projects. We just want everyone to be aware of the efforts so that they can contribute if they are inclined to do so, and further help in the growth of this field in India. I don't just mean monetarily. As I said at the Open Discussion, anyone who feels they can help in some way in their area of expertise, feel free to step forward and let us know. Be it technical (improvements on the site), help with approaching sponsors (I've already had one volunteer in this and we're working towards preparing the necessary material on our end), on-site volunteering for other events like Sudoku Champs (we already have one person in Chennai who has offered to help out with this) and so on, approach one of me/Deb/Amit/Rakesh and let us know the details so we can discuss it further.
