I thank Deb for the opportunity : ) In general, last year's format, as planned by Deb, was well received and was, going by WSC rankings, pretty accurate in determining India's best solvers. So, for the most part, I'll be going by a similar pattern. So I suggest last year's Championship booklet as good (unofficial ) practice material.

Country : India | At this point I would request everyone not to make any assumptions about ISC/ TSC.
ISC has always been the mechanism for selecting the Indian participants for the world championships and continues to do so. Even last year the toppers from the ISC were invited to represent India at the WSC.
The only difference between TSC and ISC is that the participants selected though the TSC will have their travel and participation fees being paid for.
Coming to the question of when is the TSC for 2014 going to be held, I will be upfront about it that the dates have not been finalized yet. We are having some scheduling issues this year as the world championships are taking place earlier than usual.
So the key question that needs to be addressed is whether the Indian team will be sponsored or not. I cannot answer the question at the moment, but I will sure hope that the lack of clarity about the sponsorship at this stage will not influence anyone's enthusiasm to participate in the ISC.

Please understand that it is difficult on the part of the organizers to make and act upon such assumptions (which I suppose is why Amit specifically requested that there be no assumptions ). The TSC statuses will be confirmed in due time. Since there is ample time from now till June 1st, maybe we'll even know before the Championships, but what I will say as ISC organizer is to just put all that aside and enjoy the ISC for what it is, the crowning of a new Indian Champion. As the current Champion, I can't think of any added motivation being necessary. |

Country : India | Some more practice. The Instruction Booklet's Inside Skyscrapers example was taken from the Instruction booklet of Best of LMI Mocks. Obviously, this means there is another one in the Puzzle Booklet. Note - it is under the name "Hidden" Skyscrapers. Also, I wrote one of these as practice for the World Sudoku Championship last year, and it can be found on my blog here . Note - this has diagonal arrows too which won't be there in the competition puzzle, but it is still nice practice nonetheless. For this puzzle, digits can repeat for diagonal arrows and same numbers can block each other as far as visibility goes.
There are Search 9s and Descriptive Pairs (there may be overlap with the Instruction booklet as I used some of my old Sudokus as examples ) on my blog.
The rest of it is mostly common types. The Expanded Sudoku is a slight tweak to the ISC 2013 variant, Overlapping Sudoku, so that should be helpful as far as this form of thinking goes.
Beginners' Sudoku Contests should help for all the common variants.
The only thing left is Fortress I think, there are two I quickly found on Bastien's blog, but you should find more with searching a little through the LMI Monthly Tests. |

Secondly a minor technicality in the IB. In the Bonus section it is mentioned "Players submitting all Sudokus will get seven points per minute saved as bonus". I thnk it would be better if we added "Players submitting all correct answers" or something to this effect. Technically I can submit all wrong answers too. Nothing major but just an observation.

Instant Grading is enabled this year, so unless you keep submitting things wrong, you don't have to worry about that. : )

The top 3 participants receive a Logic Masters India mug, with their position displayed on it. Participants ranked 4th ~ 10th place will receive a Logic Masters India photo magnet.
After the ISC, the top 10 here and in IPC will be e-mailed with a request for their address in order to send the prizes. Some of the IPC winners have already sent us the details, which have been noted.
Also, participation certificates will be e-mailed to everyone, but if you want a signed hard copy of the certificate with your rank, it will be couriered to you for a fee of Rs. 99. Please mail at prasannaseshadri@logicmastersindia.com if you want to order a hard copy.
Just to clarify, this will only be for the rankings in the official results.

Country : India | Clarifications about Bonus eligibilitySince Instant Grading is enabled, "Submitting all Sudokus" means submitting them correctly. Also, with the diminishing points system of IG, participants are still eligible for bonus if they score 0 points on individual Sudokus but they have to submit all Sudokus correctly even knowing it'll get them 0 points if they want to be eligible for time bonus.

It just means that converse rule does not apply. For example in XV sudoku all possible Xs and Vs are marked. Similarly in Consecutive sudokus all possible dots are marked.
But in Inside Skyscraper all possible arrows are NOT marked.
See R2C9 : It is valid put a left arrow, but the author didn't mark it.
See R5C1 there is no down arrow (only right arrow is marked )

Country : India | A bit about the authors for the Indian Sudoku Championship -
Frédéric Stalder, from Switzerland, began to create some sudokus in 2009. Most of his sudokus can be found on his blog http://sudokuvariante.blogspot.com/. He created sudokus for various magazines, for regional, national or online tournaments, including some here on LMI. As a competitive solver, he took part in World Sudoku championships since 2011, and is since this year the best representative of his country.
Nikola Zivanovic is from Serbia. He started a blog called LOGIKA 5 years ago but is currently inactive there. Recently, he has turned his efforts towards authoring Online competitions at the International level. In addition to some contests here on LMI, including the most recent Beginners' Sudoku Contest, his puzzles can be seen on various International tournaments like the 4th Sudokucup, the WPF Sudoku GP, etc. As a competitive solver, he is a regular fixture on the Serbian team since the first World Sudoku Championship in 2006 and has secured some impressive top 10 positions in the World Sudoku Championships over the years.
Bastien Vial-Jaime is a french puzzlemaker who runs the blog EnigmAttic - http://enigm-attic.blogspot.in/, where he publishes a weekly puzzle or sudoku variant. As a player, he is a regular member of the french team at both the WSC and WPC, and has secured some impressive top 10 positions in recent years.
Zuzana Hromcová is from Slovakia, and is one of the authors at slovaksudoku.com. There is a detailed description on their authors page, but to summarize - she regularly works with talented youth of Slovakia through the Youth League on the slovaksudoku website, has co-written some contests here on LMI, and Sudokucup 5.
In addition to these International authors, there are some contributions from the LMI team as well, namely myself and Deb Mohanty. Since you're already on LMI if you're reading this, Deb's basically the person who runs the site, and has also authored many contests here, including multiple National Championships. I have my own blog, but I'm not nearly as active as I used to be. My recent efforts, apart from writing puzzles for GM Puzzles and the recent Monthly Tests on LMI, have gone into starting a Patronage system for LMI. While the Championship is free, if you enjoy our contests, and want to give something back, please check it out.

Since this competition follows Instant Grading, we will be rejecting all points claims about typos. The IG system exists exactly for the purpose of enabling participants to fix typos. But, we will consider claims for the following cases, to remove the penalty -
1. Correct answer for Sudoku X is typed into box for Sudoku Y.
2. Answer is correct in all cells which are empty, but a cell with a given clue is typed wrong.
3. Correct answer for some row/column in a Sudoku bot not the marked Row/Column.
4. Entering 6 digits of the row/column correctly and 3 digits correctly from the row/column just next to the one marked (3/3 split for 6x6).
Please note that these are all only valid claims for removing penalty and not for awarding points. If you receive a message that your answer is wrong, you are expected to fix it and re-submit correctly to be awarded points.

But for discussion sake, you should be able to solve the IB examples as well as the competition puzzles without using meta-techniques. |

At 2:00 PM, you can click on start ISC and then you will be given password which you will use to open that secured booklet. Then you will have exactly 2 hrs 30 min to solve sudokus and submit.

Also, please remember (for future contests ) that the IB is typically released at least 3-4 days before an event, so if you are facing difficulty with understanding, you can ask about it in the forum here. |

The result pages are all linked to here and here. Congrats once again to the Indian top 3 of Rishi, Rohan and Gaurav. Rishi has ended it on an impressive 2nd place Internationally.
The International top 3 were Kota, Rishi and Jaku111. Well played, all 3 of you.
ISC 2014 doubled as the Campionato italiano di sudoku. Congrats to the Italian winner, Giovanni Frugoli (Akuma21 ).
We hope all the new participants (and the regulars too of course! ) enjoyed this contest. The solution booklet will be released tomorrow.
My general thoughts on picking the types for this contest was to categorize it in the following way -
Classics (1-4 )
Smaller grids (8 6x6s )
A variation in presentation (Expanded )
Classic Lookalikes (Mirror, Irregular, Untouch )
Common variants (Diagonal, Odd )
Math variants (Killer, Arrow )
Relation variants (Thermo, Fortress )
Converse-Rule constraint variants (Consecutive, XV )
Uncommon variants (with "varying concepts" like distance (Search 9 ), heights (Inside Skyscraper ) and positions (Descriptive Pairs ) )
Overall I feel ISC covered most of the broad categories appearing at a WSC and will surely prepare the winners well. At the same time I also feel it had enough classics to keep newcomers interested. I mainly followed Deb's format from last year which has proved to be well received for 2 consecutive years now. With minor changes, I think this is a good format to stick with. However, if the participants have any thoughts/feedback on this please feel free to let us know. |

Country : India | And now the Author details, with the number of guesses for each author. Some funny stats: No one guessed that the XV is Bastien's. Fred's Classic style seems to be close to Deb's for some of you. The most accurate ones (with 2 or more guesses than the next highest number for the puzzle ) were 6x6 Sudokus, Irregular Sudoku, Odd Sudoku and Descriptive Pairs (I thought Inside Skyscrapers would be my obvious sweep but it seems that was unanimously voted as Nikola's puzzle ).

Wow! 7 correct guesses are fine, but I was pretty sure that Deb is the author of Classic sudokus and Nikola author of the Inside skyscrapers. By the way, I have never seen Diagonal sudoku by Zuzana, that really surprised me ...  |

The Inside Skyscraper Sudoku should have been worth a million points, since it appears unsolvable. Seriously, though, I have been struggling with it for a couple hours and have only placed 6 or 7 numbers (some 1's 2's and a 3 ) but hit a solid impenetrable stone wall. The other variants were quite fun. |

One of the test solvers missed an important corollary here that doesn't apply to normal skyscrapers. This is the fact that the number which is placed in the cell with the arrow cannot appear in the buildings it sees. So where in normal skyscraper a "7" clue can "see" a 3 at the start (going to 3-4-5-6-7-8-9 ), in Inside Skyscraper, this cannot happen since the 7 is taken away from the buildings and can at most see (3-4-5-6-8-9 ). Once I pointed this out to my test solver it all fell in (still a work-through, but not impossible at least ). Maybe this tip helps you too? |

Country : India | Update - E-certificates sent E-certificates have been sent to all official participants with non-zero scores. If anyone has not received an e-certificate, please let us know here.
Also, an email was sent to the respective top 10s of IPC and ISC requesting for their address in order to send their prize. The ones whose address was already given to the organizers (either as a prize claim or a certificate claim ) weren't included in this mail, but for others who secured a top 10 Official ranking, this is another reminder about the same.
Tomorrow, all the participants who've ordered a hard copy of the certificate will be sent details to transfer the cost to LMI. Once transferred, the certificates will be sent to the given addresses.
