You're doing this the same weekend as the Indian GP round? I think it is the other way around. WPF is doing the GP round in the same weekend as this. We published the schedule 6 months in advance.
ETA : Considering the overlap (and that 26 th is a national holiday ), we will have this running on 26 th as well. |

Yes you are correct regarding heyawacky.
Regarding Lakes, Its Nurikabe without connectivity rule and without 2x2 rule. |

The only rule to be careful about with Heyawacky is that Heyawake is generally worded as "rooms" for the spanning rule and Heyawacky as "borders". This is mainly because the same irregular region can wrap around two borders. For example a U pentomino is allowed to have both its "ends" unshaded and the cell in between them unshaded by Nikoli Heyawake rules which use "rooms", but not allowed by Heyawacky rules using "borders". |

Any beginner level tips and strategies for Crazy pavement ? I attempted a couple of easy puzzles from Janko which gave me the impression that there are not many tricks in the puzzle.So,I jumped to a bigger sized puzzle where I was clearly clueless .The grid was 12X12 and the start was really difficult with bigger valued clues....
Please share the puzzles, so that we can help you.
In general one tip I would give is doing some math for each row/column which has clue. For e.g. If you consider the IB example: For 1st row, the combinations of shading available is 1+2+4, and the clue is "5". So you clearly know it has to be 1+4. So you can keep doing like that. This will make your things easy.
Secondly, sometimes try looking for combined clues together for multiple rows/columns.

A fun set overall, if more on the easier side. Apparently Windows is a type that can be broken by intuition; I did Windows 4 in 2m25, the largest point/time ratio for this test. I'm not very certain why Paint by Numbers is chosen here, since it's not a very deep type on its own; I don't think there's too many variations of tricks that can be used there. On the other hand, it's perhaps the type that is most well-known to people not active in competitive puzzling, so perhaps that's a reason on its own. It's also interesting that there's a lack of "common" shading types such as Nurikabe, but since the basic things of shading puzzles are covered ("black cells cannot be adjacent" and "white cells form contiguous region" are by Heyawacky; "black cells are connected" and "no 2x2 black cells" are by Windows; even Nurikabe's own island rule exists as Lakes ), I guess the variations do represent the theme well. |

Once again, this set was a lot of fun, though maybe a little too easy. There was a good amount of variety in the different puzzle types, and I liked seeing some unfamiliar types. Heyawacky 4 was very nice, and I also really liked both instructionless puzzles (though I made the stupid mistake of solving the instructionless Heyawacky example, thinking it was one of the puzzles for points ). |

Thanks for your feedback. Yes this round was targeted towards easy side. Although the details regarding thinking behind selection of puzzles and difficulty will be posted once the test is over.
But just to complete the reasoning for Paint by Numbers, it's as what you said. It's easy to do, fun and suitable for beginners.

Yes that happens sometimes, also the reason could be that you saw 2 examples for Heyawacky as against 1 example of Crazy pavement instruction less. |

I loved this round, many puzzles had really nice solving methods : ) I nearly not finished it because I had to restart at least 3 puzzles after an error on my side, but I had a lot of fun anyway : ) Specifically loved the crazy pavement, I like the reasonings in this type. Thank you ! |

Hi, I am not sharing the steps for the puzzles in the contest right now, because i believe if you know the tricks, then you can solve it on your own. These are all easy puzzles.

Thumbs up for the instructionless variants and some good rarer puzzle types with nicely flowing solving. Seems I find windows puzzles relaxing to solve. Nice to have a set of puzzles I can finish in the time too. |

Got through everything fine ... except the Windows!! That was not a type I had done before, and I was completely lost, staring at them for about 30 minutes, with only the first one solved. Can someone please post some hints or tricks for Windows, or maybe step through one? I would really appreciate that!
Hi, I am not sharing the steps for the puzzles in the contest right now, because i believe if you know the tricks, then you can solve it on your own. These are all easy puzzles.

OK, I'll take a look at those, thanks! And I forgot to say earlier that other than my complete bewilderment at Windows, I did really enjoy the puzzles, especially the variations. Nice job!! |

OK, I looked at your Tricks and I get it now: because you cannot create islands, you can never have a checkerboard pattern (Trick 2 ... and hence Trick 1 follows as a special case ). Wow, that makes it easy indeed. Now I know. Thanks! |

Thumbs up for the instructionless variants and some good rarer puzzle types with nicely flowing solving. Seems I find windows puzzles relaxing to solve. Nice to have a set of puzzles I can finish in the time too.

Nice puzzle set, I thouroughly enjoyed all the puzzles which I solved within the time frame. Special thanks to DEB MOHANTY. It's only due to his idea of solving it in the "PAINT" made me try and attempt the test without any botheration and difficulties reagrding printing, which I faced during my earlier puzzle tests (since I don't own, and have easy access to a printer ). |

Country : India | Thank you every one for their feedback. Congrats to EKBM, nyoroppyi and deu for top 3 spots.
Congrats to Prasanna, Rohan and Amit for finishing the test.
Most of the comments were "Just right or easy puzzles". Yes, it was expected. This test was meant to be easy, and it is clearly visible as 72 Solvers completed the test.
But I was expecting few more Indians to complete the test, that was little shocking. A very nice performance by Ashish and Kishore.
I would post more detail about puzzles, selection and creation as separate post soon. But till then, if any one was struggling with any particular puzzle, please post a comment here, so that I can help you solve it.
